He was of [[Georgians|Georgian]] origin and a [[devshirme]]. In 1710, he was appointed as the commander of the [[janissary]] corps (). He was successful during the [[Pruth River Campaign]]. By the [[Treaty of Pruth]] [[Peter the Great]] of the [[Russian Empire]] agreed to provide a free passage for [[Charles XII of Sweden]] to return tıo his country. Next year Ağa Yusuf Pasha was appointed as the grand vizier. However although an able commander he lacked the skill of a statesman. When Peter refused to allow a free passage for Charles the sultan [[Ahmet III]] decided to declare war on Russia. But Ağa Yusuf Pasha persuaded him to give up the idea believing that Peter would finally obey the terms of the treaty. However Peter was still reluctant and the angered sultan dismissed him on 31 November 1712.
