RIZAL’S LAST HOURS
RIZAL’S LAST HOURS
On Philippine History and Culture
On December 26, 1896, the military court tried Jose Rizal and later found him guilty of rebellion, sedition, and conspiracy. The Spanish authorities believed that Rizal’s writings “fatally and necessarily” incited the rebellion which, by 1896, had already become a revolution. On December 29 at 6 a.m., Capt. Rafael Dominguez read before Rizal his death sentence. His execution was scheduled the following day.
At around 7 a.m. of December 29, Rizal was transferred to his death cell in Fort Santiago. There he received numerous visitors, including his counsel; some Spanish officials; and several priests, his former professors, with whom he supposedly discussed reason and religion. The Archbishop of Manila, Rev. Bernardino Nozaleda, recalled: “During that day, although Rizal did not reject [the Jesuits], he persisted in his errors contrary to the Catholic faith.… However, at the last hour, Rizal abjured, in writing, his religious errors.” In other words, Rizal, a Mason, was said to have recanted his statements against the Church and to have returned to the Catholic faith.
The controversy over Rizal’s retraction has not been settled. The “original” document of Rizal’s “retraction” was found in the archdiocesan archives in 1935, 39 years after having disappeared the day Rizal was shot. There was no record of anybody seeing this “original” document in 1896, except the publishers of La Voz Española, which published its contents on the day of Rizal’s execution: “We have seen and read his (Rizal’s) own handwritten retraction which he sent to our dear and venerable Archbishop….” Most experts think that the handwriting on the document is authentic. However, scholars are baffled as to why Rizal, who courageously faced persecution for most of his life, and who was finally sentenced to death for his beliefs, would suddenly balk at the last, futile moment. (For more discussion on Rizal’s retraction, see Garcia, 1964; Guerrero, 1998; and Vaño, 1985).
In his last hours Rizal read the Bible and Thomas à Kempis’s Imitation of Christ, which he later dedicated to Josephine Bracken. He also wrote the poem “Mi Ultimo Adiós,” which he concealed in an alcohol burner. When his family came to see him, he asked pardon from his mother and talked to his sisters as they entered his cell one by one. He also wrote letters. In his last letter, addressed to Paciano Rizal, he asked his brother to ask their father for forgiveness for all the pain he had caused him. To his friend Ferdinand Blumentritt, he wrote: “When you receive this letter, I shall be dead by then…. Tomorrow at seven, I shall be shot; but I am innocent of the crime of rebellion…. I am going to die with a tranquil conscience.”
At 7 a.m. on December 30, 1896 at Luneta, Manila, the 35-year-old patriot was shot in the back by a firing squad. He hesitated, turned halfway around to face his executioners, and fell on his back to face the Philippine sun.

Domitian (, ; c. 550 – 602) was the nephew of the Roman emperor Maurice and the bishop of Melitene in Roman Armenia from around 580 until his death. He was renowned as a diplomat and is regarded as a saint by the Chalcedonian churches for enforcing orthodoxy in the northeast of the empire.

Domitian was born around 550. According to the Chronicle of 1234 and Michael the Syrian, he was the son of Maurice's brother Peter, although John of Nikiu makes him Maurice's cousin, the son of his paternal uncle. Many other sources—e.g. Evagrius Scholasticus, Theophylact Simocatta, Nicephorus Callistus—describe him as a relative without specifying further. Ernest Honigmann made Domitian a cousin of Maurice by taking his father, Peter, for the emperor's maternal uncle.

According to John of Ephesus's Historia Ecclesiastica, Maurice arranged his election as metropolitan bishop of Melitene about two years before the he succeeded to the imperial throne, while he was still just magister militum per Orientem. Domitian was a widower at the time. He reportedly gave the gifts he received from the emperor to the poor.

Domitian became a close confidant of the emperor, entrusted by Maurice with important affairs of state. The Monophysite John of Ephesus, who died before Domitian's persecution of the Monophysites, regarded him as an astute advisor. In this capacity, he mainly resided in Constantinople in the periods 582–585 and 591–598. In 587 or 588, King Childebert II of Austrasia wrote to him seeking a peace treaty with the Romans. This letter is preserved in the collection known as the Epistulae Austrasicae. In 590, he was sent with Bishop Gregory of Antioch to Constantina to join the exiled Persian king Khosrow II, whom Maurice intended to restore. He took the surrender of the Persian garrison occupying Martyropolis. He accompanied Khosrow and the Roman army under Narses as far as Mardin in 591. He negotiated a treaty with Khosrow, who had great confidence in him.

Pope Gregory the Great wrote at least three letters to Domitian (August 593, 1 June 595 and September or October 598). In the testament that Maurice had drawn up in 596 or 597, which was only discovered in the reign of Heraclius, Domitian was named guardian of the emperor's children. In 598 or 599, at Domitian's request, Maurice authorized him to persecute the Monophysites in the vicinity of Melitene. This persecution was probably not too severe, since the Monophysites later came to regard Maurice as a saint<!--"the persecution cannot have attained significant proportions, for Maurice nonetheless was awarded the accolade of sainthood by the monophysite tradition"-->, but Monophysite sources—the Chronicle of 724, the Chronicle of 819, the Chronicle of 1234, Michael the Syrian and Bar Hebraeus—are universally hostile to Domitian, accusing him of seizing all their churches in northern Mesopotamia and Syria. He deposed Thomas of Harqel from the see of Mabbug, forcing him into exile in the Enaton. By contrast, the Chalcedonian bishop Eulogius of Alexandria dedicated on of his theological works to Domitian. He is also remembered for trying to convert local Zoroastrians.

According to Theophanes the Confessor, Domitian died on 12 January 602 and was buried in the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople. Other sources give his date of death as 10 January and that is the day of his celebration in the Chalcedonian churches, who regard him as a saint. He is in the revised Roman Martyrology (2004), but not in the General Roman Calendar.

The following is a list of characters from Strike the Blood.

Main characters
;
:</ref> Mutsumi Tamura (child)}}
:Three months prior to the beginning of the story, typical Saikai Private Academy () high school student Kojo Akatsuki became the ) vampire, made so by his predecessor, Avrora Florestina who also blocked his memories of the event. When sexually aroused, he suffers nosebleeds and succumbs to a bloodlust eased only by drinking blood — early on, his own. Kojo possesses common vampire traits, such as superhuman strength, speed, reflexes and regeneration, but as a progenitor, he also possesses greater powers, especially the capacity to control of which he inherited twelve from his predecessor. Each time he preys upon another human, he gains control over a familiar, which do not acknowledge him beforehand.

;
:
:A middle-school from the ancient , Yukina was sent to 'observe' the Fourth Progenitor with special instructions to eliminate him should she deem him dangerous. To aid her in her duties, she is equipped with a magic halberd or lance named Sekkarou (). Taking her role as overly seriously, she moves into the apartment next to Kojo's and follows him everywhere. Unbeknownst to her or anyone outside the Lion Kings' directors, her actual purpose is apparently to become the Fourth Progenitor's first blood partner and mate. Like many of its members, she was sold to the Lion Kings by her parents. While initially positioning herself exclusively as the observer of a dangerous threat to humanity, she soon begins exhibiting trust and romantic feelings towards Kojo and jealousy towards other women. During their battle against the Lotharingian exorcist Rudolf Eustach, she gives herself to Kojo, enabling him to first gain control of a familiar. In a glimpse into the future, she is presumed married to Kojo and has a daughter from him named Reina.

;
:
:Asagi is Kojo's friend and classmate. She is an impossibly expert programmer and hacker who works part-time for the Itogami Island Management Corporation () which administers the city and island; this provides her with access to powerful, hidden systems and information. She has a crush on Kojo but does not act upon it until feelings of jealousy are provoked by Yukina's arrival. Despite knowing that the island is deeply connected to supernatural persons and creatures, she is unaware that her friends are among them until Kojo and Yukina finally reveal the truth to her. Her own hidden identity is that of the .

;
:
:A , which specialize in hexes and assassination, in the Lion King Agency, she is Yukina's former roommate and best friend. She wields a transforming sword/bow named Koukarin () in its sword form and der Freishütze () in its bow form. She is both overprotective of Yukina and androphobic, which gets Kojo off on the wrong foot when they first meet. Forced by circumstances to work closely with Kojo, she warms to him and eventually offers herself, gaining him control of a second familiar. Subsequent to this, she develops romantic feelings towards him. While her regular duties involve investigating international magical crimes, her encounters with Kojo were apparently similarly arranged by the Lion Kings with the same objective in mind as with Yukina.

;
:
:Natsuki is Kojo's English teacher and a renowned attack mage known as the . Her appearance is that of a grade school girl. Her typical garb is a black gothic lolita dress and she often carries a black parasol or folding fan. In addition to her duties as a teacher, she performs various security and investigative functions for the island. She becomes the guardian of Astarte and Kanon Kanase, and provider for Nina Adelard. As a witch, her guardian spirit is the Rheingold ().

;
:
:Motoki is secretly a member of the Lion Kings and the proper 'observer' of the Fourth Progenitor and as such, his actions are restricted. He is a classmate and friend to Kojo and Asagi. Knowing her well, he often encourages Asagi to pursue Kojo. He is an ESPer with the ability to manipulate sound waves in myriad ways but is susceptible to crippling headaches when exposed to loud noise. He often augments his abilities with a pair of headphones and occasionally with drugs.

;
:
:Nagisa is Kojo's younger sister and attends the Saikai Academy middle school and is a classmate of Yukina and Kanon. She is gregarious and extraverted and quickly befriends Yukina when she moves in next door. Efforts are made by those close to her to keep her unaware of much of the supernatural activity that surrounds her brother. She was apparently traumatized after a demonic attack four years prior. She unknowingly carries remnants of Avrora who occasionally at critical moments when Nagisa is unconscious near a supernatural event, will possess her body and offer assistance or cryptic advice.

Supporting Characters
;
:
:Asagi's virtual partner who assists in her hacking missions. He is the avatar of the supercomputers that administrate Itogami Island (), but his deeper purpose is obscure.

;
:
:A homunculus notable in that she controls a familiar, she arrived on Itogami Island as a servant to Eustach. She currently serves Minamiya as a maid. She typically expresses little emotion, and is not often talkative.

;

She is the illegitimate daughter of La Folia's grandfather, and thus her half-aunt and Polifonia's half-sister, and was raised in Japan. She is the subject of Kensei Kanase's Angel Faux (エンジェル・フォウ) experiment.

Regan Gentry

NzSteve: Added some categories

Regan Gentry (born 1976) is a New Zealand artist and sculptor. He has held a number of artist in residence positions and his work can be seen in public spaces throughout New Zealand. His artworks are often constructed from recycled or repurposed items such as gorse bushes and road safety barriers.

Education
Gentry graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 2000 although some sources state that his degree was from Otago University.

Career highlights
An early career piece was Foot in the Door, which has become an ongoing project to document the installation of a foot long ruler into the door of galleries across New Zealand. As the number of galleries that have allowed the artist to put ‘a foot in the door’ increases, so has the artist’s reputation.

As the William Hodges Fellowship artist in residence in 2006 he produced a major body of work, Of gorse of course consisting of a series of artefacts constructed from wood obtained from gorse which has become a major invasive plant species in New Zealand. By crafting articles from gorse, the artist's intention was to draw a contrast with the poor reputation enjoyed by gorse. This work was subsequently exhibited at the Dowse and is now owned by Connells Bay Sculpture Trust.

Gentry was the inaugural winner of Wellington Sculpture Trust's 4 Plinths Award. His installation Green Islands consisted of four trees constructed from No. 8 fencing wire. These stark leafless representations of the natural world provided an ironic commentary on the urban environment in which they were placed. In January 2010, the installation was relocated to the Wellington Botanic Garden.

His oversize beach lounger Recliner Rex won Gentry the Kids' Choice prize at the Australian Sculpture by the Sea exhibition in 2006.

From June 2007 to August 2008 Gentry was the artist residence at the Tylee Cottage during which time he produced near nowhere, near impossible, a reflection on the failed Mangapurua Valley Soldiers Settlement Scheme.

Napoleon Gas is a 1925 Soviet sci-fi silent movie.

Plot
A Corsican chemical engineer Napoleon Ginimer invents a new chemical weapon, a gas that burns everythuing alive. In cooperation with governments he successfully tests it on convicts. He offers the formula to various governments so to produce weapons, but they seem to be not interested due to the high price he asks.

Meanwhile, in the USA there is a secret fascist order "Black Klan", planning to destroy the Soviet Union. The US war minister is a secret member of the order, and another member of the order, a chemical industrialist illegally produces poitionous gases for the order on his plant under the disguise of aniline paints.

The order decided to kill Ginimer and steal the formula, for which purpose they send two female assassins to his hotel in Berlin. The assassings entered the Ginimer's room, kill him with a knife and take the formula.

On the order's meeting when the members open the envelope of the formula it turns out the paper contains a letter from Ginimer in which he explains that he anticipated the assassination and prepared to it, so they did not kill him. The formula is still at his possession, so everyone is free to buy it, rather than attempting to steal.

It turns out Ginimer put a maniquine instead of himself in his bed while sleeping under it.
The order members decided to invite Ginimer and offer him a position at the chemical plant.

So, Ginimer comes to the USA with his formula and starts to work at the paint plant, covertly producing poitionous gases for the order.
The workers of the plant start a riot, refusing producing the poitionous gases, but the riot was suppressed. The workers managed to contact a workers' newspaper.

Meanwhile, Ginimer is invited into a meeting of the International Fascist League, where he is tasked to destroy the USSR by bombing it, and in particular, Leningrad with the gas, to which he agrees.

The fascist order forms an air bombing squadron headed by Gninimer and loads it with the gas bombs. The squadron departs to bomb Leningrad, while a plane of the workers' newspaper follows it.

Gizimer establishes a temporary air base in Pargolovo, near Leningrad and starts raids on the city. The USSR organizes air defense using radio-controlled flying drones, which allows to defeat the invaders.

Gizimer is shot from a revolver by a female Soviet chemical instructor.
