== Biography ==
Born around 1730 in [[Karlin (Pinsk)|Karlin]], [[Belarus]]. His father Rabbi Samuel Levin, was a prominent Belarusian rabbi and staunch proponent of the [[Misnagdim]]. In his early years, he was sent by his father to learn at the yeshiva of the [[Vilna Gaon]]. He later travelled to [[Mezhirichi]], where he became a leading disciple of [[Dov Ber of Mezeritch]], who sent him to [[Indura|Amdur]], where he established his own Hasidic court in 1772. It was also around this time that he authored an his [[Masterpiece|magnum opus]] "Chaim VaChesed", which is now an important early Hasidic work.<ref></ref>
