Tsumeb Reformed Church

Tildemanana: Added article from Afrikaans Wikipedia on a Namibian church

The Tsumeb Reformed Church is a congregation of the Reformed Churches in South Africa (GKSA) based in Tsumeb, Namibia, also including members in the towns of Oshakati (where the a local Oshakati Reformed Church was active from 1988 to 1990), Ruacana, and Namutoni.

The Tsumeb Reformed Church was founded March 26, 1955, the same year that the Otjiwarongo and Biermanskool (known at the time as Vanjaarsveld) were founded. Services were held at first in the primary school meeting hall, while the athletic grounds were used for church social activities. In 1957, the church council purchased land from a local mine, the Tsumeb Corporation, for a nominal fee of £1. The building there was used at the time by the local Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa (NHK) congregation, founded on December 2, 1950. The Nelspruit Reformed Church was suggested as a model for the blueprint, but construction was delayed. In 1960, a meeting was held to decide on whether to build a church or a simple meeting hall, but no decision was taken.

In 1962, the congregation assented to a church building given a blueprint by J.P. van Graan, a mining engineer, which the municipal government promptly approved, but another two years would pass before construction would begin in earnest, during which a new plan had to be drawn up and approved. A member, B. Hurter, was the architect, while the construction was contracted to the firm of Van Zyl and Schwalm.

The building finally built was an A-frame-type church with a steel frame and paneled windows, without a tower. A member, Mr. Strydom, made the pews. The church grounds were dedicated in 1966, and on March 4, 1967, the services began therein. On that day, it rained so much the official ceremony in which the doors were unlocked could not take place.

In 1978, the congregation decided to enlarge the church building. An organ, similar to the one from the Grootfontein Reformed Church, was ordered from South Africa, along with new pews. The organ that was later delivered was secondhand. The church council accepted it, but the shippers had forgotten to send the outer paneling. Arrangements needed to be made to bring it with a military aircraft to Grootfontein, causing much consternation from the army that thought the unusual material resembled Russian weaponry. After much wrangling, the congregation succeeded in obtaining the panels.
