Balkan Slavic linguistic area

Jingiby: Some tweaks

The Balkan Slavic dialects form the south-eastern part of the South Slavic dialect continuum, which in general encompasses Serbo Croatian language, the Bulgarian language and the Macedonian language. This area consists of the Bulgarian and the Macedonian languages and the south-eastern dialects of the Serbian language, the so-called Prizren-Timok dialect, among which, the last is part of the broader Torlakian dialects. The Balkan Slavic is also part of the Balkan Sprachbund. The external boundaries of the Balkan Slavic area can be defined with the help of some structural features. Among the most important of them are: the loss of the infinitive, the loss of case declension, and the use of enclitic definite articles. During the 19th century, the Balkan Slavic dialects were often described as forming the Bulgarian language.<ref>Friedman V A (2006), Balkans as a Linguistic Area.
