Mirjam Finkelstein

Mirjam Finkelstein (June 10, 1933-January 28, 2017) was a [[Holocaust survivor]] and Jewish educator.<ref></ref><ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref> Born in [[Berlin|Berlin, Germany]] to Dr. Alfred Wiener, a Jewish activist and founder of the [[Wiener Library for the Study of the Holocaust and Genocide|Wiener Library]]<ref> Cumberland Lodge|website=www.cumberlandlodge.ac.uk|access-date=2019-04-29}}</ref>, she moved to [[Amsterdam]] to find safety during [[World War II]].<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref> There she grew up in the same community as [[Anne Frank]] and knew each other as children.<ref name=":0"></ref>

In June 1943, however, Finkelstein was taken by the Nazis along with her mother and sisters to Westerbork transit camp and then to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.<ref></ref><ref></ref> She was one of the eye witnesses to the fact that Anne Frank and her sister, Margot, were in [[Bergen-Belsen concentration camp]]. When she saw them arrive in the camp she took out a forbidden pocket diary and wrote a note about their arrival, which became important evidence after the war for Anne Frank's whereabouts. <ref name=":0" /> Mirjam's father, who had managed to get to [[London]] in 1939, obtained fake Paraguayan passports for his family and she was included as part of a prisoner exchange at the Swiss border in January 1945.<ref name=":1"></ref><ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref>

Finkelstein settled in London, England and married Ludwik Finkelstein. They had three children including [[Daniel Finkelstein]].<ref name=":1" /> She spent years visiting schools to talk about her experiences during the Holocaust. In 2016 she was photographed for the book ''Survivor''. <ref name=":0" />
