== Life and work ==

Oltmanns was born in 1956 in Leipzig, after his high school graduation he completed his military service form 1976 to 1981.

After that he studied at the TH Ilmenau [[Cybernetic]] and did his dipolma.

He dedicated himself to photography unexpectedly after studying cybernetics and spending two years in the industry.
As an autodidact, he tried to make his own way in the world of images. He found his way then and has been developing it further ever since.

From 1983 he started working as an independent photographer in Leipzig.

During the years 1987 to 1990 he coedited and produced the Art Informel magazine »Zweite Person«.
On year later he moved to Berlin and collaborated with Maria Luise Faber.

After that he recieved a grant in 1994, from the Stiftung Kulturfonds, 1995 aswell a residential grant from the state of Sachsen-Anhalt in Dessau.

2002 Oltmanns recieved a grant from the Kunstverein Röderhof and 2008 a grant from Künstlerhaus Ahrenshoop, supported by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

In 2010 he got a fellowship at NOMOS, Glashütte.

Dietrich Oltmanns lives and works in Berlin and Lindenbrück/Teltow-Fläming.
