The '''Soviet–Afghan border war''' was a conflict between the [[Soviet Union]] and the [[Emirate of Afghanistan]] which lasted from November 1925 to August 1926. It began when the Soviet Union occupied the island of [[Urta Tagail|Urtatagai]], which the Soviets claimed was being used as a base by [[Basmachi]] insurgents to raid Soviet territory.<ref name=":0">Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref> It ended on 31 August 1926, when the Soviet Union and Afghanistan signed a Pact of Neutrality and Non-Aggression,<ref></ref><ref name=":0" /> which obligated Afghanistan to restrain Basmachi border raids.<ref name=":0" />
