While working for [[China Central Television]], he proposed the idea of hosting a televised party to celebrate the [[Chinese New Year]]. The first New Year's Gala aired in 1983, with only 60 staff members and 200 guests. It proved a huge hit with viewers nationwide, and since then the CCTV New Year's Gala has become a new tradition in China.<ref name=":0">Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref> Huang directed the first four editions of the gala (1983–1986), as well as the 1990 edition.<ref name=":0" /> The program is now the most-watched TV show in the world, with a billion viewers in 2018.<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref>
