Born in [[Zwickau]], Otto began his career as a choir singer and shortly afterwards became a [[Solo (music)|soloist]]. From 1956 to 1961 and in the 1974/75 season Otto was firmly engaged at the . In addition to his activities as a singer, Otto was involved in [[church music]] and working with choirs. Otto often returned to his theatre in Zwickau for guest performances.

In his hometown Zwickau, Otto was socially active for a long time as a city councillor and local politician in various committees. In 1972 Otto was awarded the [[Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau]] "for his many years of successful service and advocacy for the good of the city".<ref>Liquid error: wrong number of arguments (1 for 2)</ref>
