Guido II Embriaco or Guido II of Gibelet (d. 1282 in Nephin) was "Lord (Signore) of Gib(e)let" or "Gibelletto" (r. 1271−1282), the modern and historic Byblos in Lebanon. He belonged to the Embriaco family.
Biography
Guido II was the son of Henry I Embriaco (d. c. 1271) and Isabelle d'Ibelin, daughter of Balian of Beirut. In 1271, he became the Lord of Gibelet, after his father.
He was a former vassal of Bohemond VII in Byblos, before he kidnapped the daughter of Hugh l'Aleman to marry her to his brother Jean (Giovanni), which caused a dispute with Bohemond VII, who intended to marry her to the nephew of Barthélémy Mansel (es), bishop of Tortosa, and then fled to the Templars.
Grievances between them had led to enmity and this was part of a larger trade war between Genoa and the Venetians.
The Templars led by William of Beaujeu sought to unseat Bohemond VII by supporting Guido II Embriaco. Bohemond VII responded by sacking the Templar house in Tripoli and forests at Montroque. This action led to indecisive fighting over the following months in 1277–1278 at Botron, Fort Nephin, Sidon and at sea, in which Guido II initially managed to defeat Bohemond VII.
In 1282, Guido II Embriaco and the Templars were ambushed in Tripoli. Guido II Embriaco, his brothers and cousins were imprisoned at Fort Nephin and left to starve. His followers were blinded. The Templars were summarily executed.
Marriage and issue
Guido II married Margaret Grenier of Sidon, daughter of Julian Grenier, Lord of Sidon. They had four children:
#Maria (es) (d. Nicosia 1331/4, buried there), married c. 1295 Philip of Ibelin, Seneschal of Cyprus
#Catherine, married Jean of Antioch
#Peter, last prince of the House of Gibelet
#Silvestre
