== Early life and career ==
John Wilson grew up in Long Island. He became interested in film as a teenager, when his dad gave him a movie camera. Wilson cites [[Les Blank]], [[George Kuchar]] and [[Bruce Brown]] as influences.<ref name=":02" />

While attending [[Binghamton University|Binghaminton University]], he made a short documentary about a balloon fetish community called ''Looner''.<ref name=":1"></ref>

In 2008, after graduating from university, Wilson worked as a private investigator. He has said this experience influenced his focus on the people and places of everyday life.<ref name=":1" />
