Paul Thiem was born in Berlin as the son of stockbroker and art collector Adolph Thiem. His mother was the daughter of the organist Samuel Lebrecht Thieme from Bärnsdorf, Saxony. He spent his childhood in Niederschöneweide at the ''Villa Thiem'' in the Sedanstraße 10. Thiem visited high school in Potsdam (From January 1882 to Easter 1882), he studied in Berlin at the Academy of Fine Arts several months art and from 1877 art history in Munich where he wrote a PhD on Tiepolo. Then he was admitted to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1883 and there a student of Gysis, Raupp and Löfftz.
== Work ==
Thiem's work can roughly be divided into two phases, the romantic, fantastic, humorous and grotesque painting and drawing period in the style of the Munich School.
As well as an other phase of works with landscapes and cityscapes and portraits, which makes him a representative of German impressionism.
