Singapore football league system

Thwekanyaw: /* History */

Association Football is the most popular football in Singapore. It has been around since the british colonial and the first ever Nation's cup tournament was held in the 1892. Ever since then football tournaments were held continuously over the years until to this day.

History
The Singapore Premier League formerly known as the S.League, was first introduced in 1996 and replace the Semi-Professional FAS Premier League. It is the first Professional football tournament in Singapore where players are given a full time contract. The next professional league, Prime League was introduced in 1997 for the reserve team of the Premier Division to compete against each other. It is more or less a professional youth league and youth players who excelled from there can be promoted to the first team. After the professional league, there is a Singapore National Football League or the NFL which is played at a semi-professional standard. It makes up the next tier after the professional league and as of now there are 2 division whereby the NFL Qualification tournament, Singapore Island Wide League or the IWL is the next tier for newly registered Football Association of Singapore clubs compete against each other to gain promotion to the NFL. As of 2018, the Prime League has be dissolved, making the NFL the next tier follow by the IWL. After the FAS Leagues, the most competitive football tournament is the amateur tournament known as the Cosmopolitan Football League, or the cosmoleague. It consists of mainly expat players in Singapore and teams from the cosmoleague teams are known to have beaten the NFL and IWL clubs in pre-season friendlies. However teams do not gain promotion to IWL or NFL as the tournament is not organised by the FAS.
