Eaton & Gilbert made [[trolley car|trolley]] and [[Carriage (rail)|train cars]], [[wikt:omnibus|omnibuses]], and [[mail coach]]es called Troy Stages. In 1852 there was a fire at the Troy plant and the plant was moved to [[Green Island, New York]]. The Gilbert Car Trust was established in 1879 that provided financing in installments for railroad cars. [[Troy & Schenectady Railroad]] hired them to build the first eight-wheel passenger car.<ref name="Rittner" />
He was first a partner of Eaton and Gilbert and became the firm’s main partner after 1862.
