Lechovitch (Hasidic dynasty)

Charlie Smith FDTB:

Lechovitch was a Lithuanian Hasidic dynasty founded by Rabbi Mordechai of Lechovitch in Lyakhovichi (known in Yiddish as Lechovitch or Lechovitz), following the school of thought of the Karlin Hasidic dynasty. The Slonim, Koidanov, and Kobrin dynasties stem from it.

History
Rabbi Mordechai of Lechovitch
Born c. 1742 in Nesvizh, Belarus, he was a descendent of of Rabbi Mordecai Yoffe. His surname has been recorded as Yoffe (the name of his ancestors), as well as Perlow or Perlov (a name used by his descendents, the Koidanover Rebbes).</ref>}} He was a student of the Rebbes of Karlin, Rabbi Aharon HaGadol, the founder of the Karlin dynasty, and Rabbi Aharon HaGadol's student and successor, Rabbi Shlomo of Karlin .

In 1772, Rabbi Mordechai of Lechovitch became the rebbe in Lyakhovichi. However, in 1784, when his teacher Rabbi Shlomo of Karlin left Karlin for Volodymyr-Volynskyi (Ludmir), he followed. Later, together with Rabbi Asher Perlow of Karlin (the son of Rabbi Aharon HaGadol), he traveled to Medzhybizh where they learned under Rabbi Boruch of Medzhybizh. In 1792, Rabbi Shlomo was killed by a Cossack anti-Semite and Rabbi Mordechai was appointed as Rebbe in his place. However, he would later return to Lyakhovichi.

When Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi was arrested in 1798 together with a group of Karliner Hassidim, Rabbi Mordechai was among the group. On January 18, 1810, he passed away, days after the death of his close friend and confidant, Rabbi Avraham of Kalisk.

Rabbi Noach of Lechovitch
After the death of Rabbi Mordechai of Lechovitch, his son, Rabbi Noach of Lechovitch became rebbe. His surname as well is unclear, written as Yoffe (the name of his ancestors), Malovitch, or Malovitsky. He led a yeshiva in Lyakhovichi where alumni included Rabbi Shlomo Chaim Perlow of Koidanov, Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Katz Alexandrovsky (author of Shaarei Yitzchak) and Rabbi Yisrael Shlomo Zalman Alexandrovsky. He died on October 2, 1832.

Division
After the death of Rabbi Noach of Lechovitch, several of his relatives and followers took positions as rebbe to succeed him. His nephew, Rabbi Shlomo Chaim Perlow (the son of his brother Rabbi Aharon of Lechovitz, who died before Rabbi Mordechai), led many of the Lechovitcher Hassidim in Koydanava, through his Koidanov Hasidic dynasty.

A student of Rabbis Mordechai and Noach of Lechovitch, Rabbi Moshe Polier , the founder of the Kobrin Hasidic dynasty, succeeded Rabbi Noach as rebbe for many of the Lechovitcher Hassidim as well, leading his court in Kobryn. After Rabbi Moshe of Kobrin's death, many of his followers became Hassidim of Rabbi Avraham Weinberg (the Yesod HaAvodah), the founder of the Slonim. Rabbi Weinberg was a student of both Rabbi Noach of Lechovitch and Rabbi Moshe of Kobrin. Other followers of Rabbi Polier chose his grandson, Rabbi Noach Naftali Palevski as their rebbe.

A third successor was Rabbi Noach of Lechovitch's son-in-law, Rabbi Mordechai Malovitzky of Lechovitch, who led a small group of Rabbi Noach's followers in Lyakhovichi. He was succeeded by his son Rabbi Aharon Malovitzki, who in turn was succeeded by two son, Rabbi Noach Malovitzky, who died in 1920. Rabbi Noach's son, Rabbi Yochanan Malovitzky, was the last rebbe to serve in Lyakhovichi. He became rebbe at the age of 18 and served in this position until he was murdered in the Holocaust in 1942.

A son of Rabbi Aharon Malovitzky of Lechovitch (and a brother of the second Rabbi Noach of Lechovitch) was Rabbi Pinchas Betzalel Malovitzky. Married to Leah, the daughter of Rabbi Shmuel Weinberg of Slonim, he served as as a scion of both the Lechovitch and Slonim dynasties. He immigrated to the United States where he served as the Rebbe of Slonim-Lechovitch.

The dynasty as well stems from Lechovitch, as the first Slonimer Rebbe, Rabbi Avraham Weinberg (also known as the Yesod HaAvodah), was a student of both Rabbi Noach of Lechovitch and Rabbi Moshe of Kobrin.
