HISTORY
According to oral history, Mallam Na-Inno and his close associate, Mallam Garba arrived in Accra from Katsina between 1845 – 1850, primarily to spread ISLAM through teaching.
On arrival, they lived at James Town, Ga-Mashie, in a rented house, which is traceable till date. In March 1881, Mallam Na-Inno and Mallam Gar’ba secured land from the chiefs and Elders of Usshertown in Accra, and established the first Hausa/Muslim settlement called ZANGON USHER TOWN or ZANGON MALLAM. Twelve years later in 1893, Mallam Na-Inno, who was the IMAM of Accra died in his home at Zangon MALLAM (present-day Zongo Lane).
He was succeeded by his son, Mallam Barko as SAR’KIN ZANGO, while the role of the Imam of Accra fell on Mallam Garba, Na-Inno’s associate. Mallam Garba also died in 1902, shortly after he had been re-instated as the IMAM OF ACCRA by the then Colonial Governor Sir Matthew Nathan, after his removal by Governor Nathan’s predecessor, Governor Frederick Mitchell Hodgson While Mallam Na-Inno is associated with the founding of ZANGON USHER TOWN (Zangon Mallam), his son, Mallam Baako, had his name attached to founding of Sabon Zango, about 5 kilometres to the South West of the old Zangon Mallam in Usshertown (Zongo-Lane).

In the early days, the foreigners settled in Old Accra, around the High Street, Cowlane (The Fulani tended cows whiles the Hausa and Zarma were traders along the West African sub region) the Hausa traded kola from the hinterlands through the Jamestown Port. There was a chief imam in the community who was the ‘Leader of Muslims’, after his death arose a succession problem among the various immigrant tribes of the community. Mallam Na-Inno, was a Mallam from Sokoto, so a petition was sent to the colonialists who decided to salvage the issues of succession and finally decided each tribe choose their own chief imam by themselves.
The Hausa chose Kadiri English, the Yoruba already had Braimah who was given a chieftaincy by the Gã Mantse, and who later married a Tabom lady with the family name "Peregrino". The Peregrinos were freed slaves from Brazil who had settled in Jamestown. The Fulani chose their chief as well as the Zarmas; so every ethnic group had a chief instead of one central Imam overlooking all the Muslims.
The unrest didn’t stop but however continued among the Hausa because they believed that Kadiri English, being a kola merchant and very rich had used his influence to get himself made the chief and hence there was rebellion. The Ga Mashie Stool decided to relocate the aggrieved Hausa people to a place several miles away from the zongo lane which was the first properly demarcated and mapped out zongo community. So they moved and the boundary was set right behind Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Abossey Okai on the other side
Mallam Na-Inno's son, Mallam Barko was brought to set up the Sabon Zango which literally means "New zongo" because the old zongo in Accra still owed allegiance to the chief they were disgruntled with being Kadiri English.
