Camilla (spacecraft)

Healpa12: Linked to external articles

Camilla is a spacecraft concept proposed for NASA’s New Frontiers program. It would be a centaur exploration mission, particularly to minor planet 10199 Chariklo. It consists of a flyby craft (Camilla), and tungsten impactor (Halbred).

Mission Plan and Goals
The spacecraft would be launched in late 2026. It would encounter Venus for a gravity assist maneuver in early 2027. After the Venus flyby, it will encounter Earth once in late 2027 and again in late 2029. In late 2031, a Jupiter assist would send it outside the plane of the ecliptic to encounter Chariklo. The goals of this mission would be to understand the formation of centaurs, find if shepherd moons exist around Chariklo, and study the nature of the ring’s formation.

Spacecraft Design
The spacecraft would be powered by a Multi-Mission RTG, and would be propelled by hydrazine thrusters. The scientific payload would consist of a tungsten impactor, high quality imaging equipment, spectral scanners, and a sub-millimeter radiometer. <ref>https://ift.tt/3qOiyV8>
