The Battle of Humera was a battle fought between Ethiopia and allied forces against forces loyal to the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in the city of Humera during the Tigray War. The battle took place from 9 November to 11 November and took the life of many civilians.

Prelude
According to a local militia member, before the battle began the Tigray special forces had already left the city under militia control. The Tigray special forces were needed in other towns and city in western Tigray. No significant defensive systems were set up and most militia forces were stationed along the Tekeze River with AK47s [assault rifles], machine guns, and snipers.

Soon after the war began at an unspecified date federal forces began an exchange of gun fire with local militias at a camp near the Eritrean border. At least one federal solider was killed when he ran across the Tekeze bridge toward Eritrea. Both forces were wounded. On 10 November federal forces captured the Humera Airport. On the same day Local militias gave machine gun fire at soldiers crossing the Tekeze bridge from Eritrea into Ethiopia. The Tigray special forces also came back to Humera to support the militias by firing into Eritrea with heavy weaponry, but it once again abandoned the militias and moved onto central Tigray.

The same day Debretsion Gebremichael said “Since yesterday, the army of [Eritrean leader] Isaias [Afwerki] have crossed the country’s boundary and invaded,” he said. “They were attacking via Humera using heavy arms.” Eritrean denied being involved in the war stating it was an internal issue Eritrean's involvement was later confirmed by the U.S.A

Shelling
Shelling of Civilians
On the morning of November 9, shellfire came from the outskirts of Humera from Camp Heligan. Shortly after mortar and tank fire came from Eritrea, killing and wounding civilians, and damaging and destroying civilian structures. The shelling continued into the evening but later stopped. Shelling would later resume on the morning of 10 November.

Most doctors at Humera's Kahsay Aberra hospital fled the city after shelling started leaving those behind to deal with the large influx patients coming in after shelling ended. Doctors at the hospital estimated that at least 46 people were killed and 200 were wounded. One doctor said: "Civilians started arriving in the hospital with injuries to the abdomen, chest, head. We were at a loss ... People with no hands, people with their stomachs hanging out. This continued the whole day. I don’t know how he did it, but a young boy brought a woman to the hospital; her intestines were out. He had tried to tie a scarf around her waist. We somehow managed to stitch her up." Those who fled went to Sudan or into nearby towns.

When shells started to fall near the vicinity of the hospital compound on 10 November, the staff, concerned that the hospital could be hit, took 50 injured people, including six federal troops and moved them to Adebay when fighting was going on but at least there were no shelling. The hospital was left abandoned and injured people were left behind.

Shelling of military targets
The shells did hit some military targets like China camp and a Tigray special forces's abandoned jail now military camp but those were the only ones the Human Rights Watch could find.
