The Philharmonia Quartett Berlin is a string quartet ensemble founded in 1985 by members of the Berlin Philharmonic.
Among the long-standing members were the concertmaster Daniel Stabrawa, the principal of the second violin Christian Stadelmann, the principal and solo violist Neithard Resa, and the cellist Jan Diesselhorst. When the latter died unexpectedly, the cello part was taken over by Dietmar Schwalke in the same year.
The Philharmonia Quartet has given concerts worldwide and has made several recordings, which are available on CDs. At the Berlin Philharmonic, the ensemble performed a Beethoven and a Shostakovich cycle, in which all of the composer's string quartets were performed.
The repertoire of the Philharmonia Quartet covered more than one hundred works from classiclal music to Neue Musik. The string quartet also devoted itself to unusual compositions of the genre, such as the first string quartet by Erwin Schulhoff, the second string quartet by Karol Szymanowski, the fourth string quartet by Paul Hindemith or the Opus 74 by Max Reger.
