About Us
The Storm Squad was created in 1999 with the opening of the Entertainment & Sports Arena (now PNC Arena) to pump up the crowds with cheers and skits and to facilitate in-game promotions at Games for the Carolina Hurricanes. The Storm Squad was the first professional "Spirit Squad" in pro in North America. Since then, many new squads hae formed and the Storm Squad has grown in size and popularity and is now as much a fixture at the games as Stormy and the Carolina Hurricanes goal horn! To this day the mission remains to enhance the experience of a Hurricanes game and promote the team in the community, with entertainment and enthusiasm that can be enjoyed by fans of all ages!

The popularity of the Storm Squad took off during the Hurricanes' trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2002, continued during the 2006 championship run and has seen continued growth each season with constant international recognition. They have become a favorite of opposing team's fans, the media, TV commentators and, of course, Caniacs of all ages.

Tryouts for the Storm Squad are held each year in August. More than 100 young men and women from local universities and the business community attend tryouts in hopes of earning one of the 16 spots on the team. The prospective members are met by a panel consisting of 10-12 judges who work in the business operations departments for the Hurricanes and PNC Arena. The final members are picked based on a wide range of job skills including their personality, interpersonal skills, energy, ability to excel in public and customer relations, work ethic and athleticism.

The team can be seen throughout the arena dancing and cheering on the canes. During games, you will likely see them in the staircases to seats or most liikely in the corners by the glass. They perform a series of cadences that get the fans pepped up and loud. The team also can be seen doing in game promotion things like games on the video board, human bowling, t-shirt time, on ice performances and even us on the ice after a Canes Win!

In addition to rocking at PNC Arena, the Storm Squad's various public appearances include charity events, corporate outings, local promotions, community events and the Canes Cool Bars Tour. They are available for appearances at public or private functions. With the Storm Squads' charisma, professionalism and hockey knowledge, they are sure to add to company or private events.

For many years, we would just clap along to songs and cheer with rally towels and flags. But in 2018, when Thomas Dundon purchased the Hurricanes, he decided to make massive changes. The Changes included attending more public events, pom poms, dances, cadences and entirely new uniforms. These new uniforms also include extra uniforms used for promo nights.

Sponsorships
As of 2020, we are currently sponsored by Pepsi. The Sponsorship terms state that the team is formally known as the "Pepsi Storm Squad" until the sponsorship changes. The Pepsi Logo can also be seen on the back of the main uniforms.

For many years, we were known as the "My Eye Doctor Storm Squad." Everytime you would see us, we'd always be ready to whip out the sunglasses and smile. We would always be cheering on the team by clapping along to the beat of a song.

In 1999, when the team was created the uniform was simply a tight shirt and pants. The uniforms were very plain and were black with a red and white stripe down the side. Over the next 10 years, only very subtle changes were made to the uniform until 2014. In 2014, the team decided to try something new and went with a red uniform. The red uniform still felt very bland but was different. only a couple of years later, we introduced a more modernized and unique uniform whichwas red with white stripes on the sleves and black down the side of the uniform. These were the first uniforms for the Carolina Hurricanes that showed stomach. Then in 2018, when the Hurricanes brought back the alternate, this gave us the idea to have 2 uniforms. The new unform is simple but cool. It's black with red striping and the word "Canes" On the front. This was the very first uniform without the Storm Squad logo on it. Then in 2019, we decided to introduce a new red uniform to replace the old home uniforms. This new uniform is very shiny with a lot of stomach being exposed.
