Born in [[Gelsenkirchen]], from 1983 to 1988 Tadday studied musicology, music education, philosophy and German language and literature at the [[Ruhr University Bochum]] and at the [[Technical University of Dortmund]]. After his legal clerkship and second state examination, he worked for three years as a music teacher at grammar schools in the lower and upper secondary levels.
Tadday worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Historical Musicology of the Institute of Music and its Didactics at the University of Dortmund. There he received his doctorate in 1992 and [[Habilitation|habilitated]] in 1998 as a scholarship holder of the [[Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft]] with a thesis on the aesthetics, critique and history of romantic music aesthetics.
In September 2002, Tadday took up the professorship for [[Music history]] in the music/musicology program of the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of Bremen. Tadday's research focuses on music history and music aesthetics of the modern era, especially of the 17th to 21st centuries.
Since 1998, Tadday has been a consultant for the encyclopedia ''[[Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart]]'' and since 2004 he has been editor of the series ''[[Musik-Konzepte]]''.
