Rosa Schwaiger (5 September 1918 – 19 April 1970) was an Austrian operatic soprano.

Life and career
Born in Saalfelden, after her first music lessons with her father, an organist, Schwaiger took piano and singing lessons at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. In 1940 she belonged to the Salzburger Landestheater; There she had one of her first great successes as "Queen of the Night". Schwaiger subsequently received engagements at the Volksoper Wien, at the Theater Basel and in Bregenz as well as at the Vienna State Opera.

In 1952, the artistic director Rudolf Hartmann took Schwaiger as first coloratura soprano to the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, as well as to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. In the latter two theatres her partners were among others Harry Friedauer, Marianne Schech, Erika Köth, Martha Kunig-Rinach and Sari Barabas. She was celebrated by the Munich audience, especially in two roles: as Papagena in the legendary production of the opera The Magic Flute of 1956 under the direction of Hans Knappertsbusch at the Prinzregententheater in Munich and as Adina in Donizetti's opera L'elisir d'amore, together with her colleague Benno Kusche, who was on the programme at the Theater am Gärtnerplatz in 1957.

At the Salzburg Festival in 1945 she sang one of the soubrette rolls that the maid Blonde sang in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, 1946 Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro and Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier. She was one of the most popular singers at the Salzburg Festival in the early/mid 1950s.

Now and then, Schwaiger made a detour to the operette. In 1952 she took on the leading female role in the WDR production of the operetta The Geisha by Sidney Jones, directed by Franz Marszalek. In 1966 Schwaiger, meanwhile appointed Bavarian Kammersänger, sang the role of Maria at the premiere of the Salzburger Passion by Cesar Bresgen at the Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg.

In 1954 Schwaiger undertook a tour through North America, on which she was celebrated. Three years later she sang very successfully at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera the Blondchen in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Papagena in The Magic Flute and the Najade in Ariadne auf Naxos. Two years before her death, the artist, already weakened by illness and dying of leukaemia in Munich at the age of 52, gave song recitals in Greece and Turkey. She was buried in Maria Alm in the Salzburger Land.
