Born in Vienna, Klingenberg studied acting and directing classes at the [[Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität]] . From 1948 he gained his first engagements at theatres in [[St. Pölten]], [[Klagenfurt]] and [[Innsbruck]] before he joined the [[Berliner Ensemble]] in 1956. From 1962 to 1968 he worked on stages in [[Cologne]], [[Frankfurt am Main]] and [[Hamburg]] as well as at [[Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus]], [[Schauspielhaus Zürich]] and [[Münchner Kammerspiele]].

From 1968 he worked as a regisseur at the [[Burgtheater|Wiener Burgtheater]], where he later held the position of director from 1971 to 1976. One of Klingenberg's special merits at the Burgtheater was that he brought the then European [[avantgarde]] directors to Vienna.
