The film was directed by Will Lockhart and Cole Pruitt, who were students at [[Brown University]] at the time. Lockhart and Pruitt also founded the American Collegiate Go Association.<ref name="washuni"></ref> ''The Surrounding Game'' follows the tournament played to establish America's first [[Go professional|professional Go player]].<ref name="huffpost"></ref> It was filmed over the course of a four-year period in several countries, following the paths of several players in the tournament:<ref name="sampan"></ref><ref name="huffpost"/>

*Curtis Tang, a child prodigy
