Kupelwieser was born in Vienna. He first grew up as the son of the manufacturer Johann Kupelwieser in Lower Austria ([[Markt Piesting]], [[Guntramsdorf]] and [[Wiener Neustadt]]), but in 1801/1802 he also attended the [[Akademisches Gymnasium (Vienna)|Akademisches Gymnasium]] and the educational institute of Giannatassio del Rio<ref>[https://ift.tt/2ChhthB Josef Giannatassio Del Rio]</ref> in Vienna. Afterwards he studied briefly at the ''Oriental Academy'', but then became a soldier and unsuccessful ironware manufacturer. With his wife Anna Nödl (wed on 17 May 1812) he had at least five children. He was one of the most active members of the ''Unsinnsgesellschaft''<ref>[https://ift.tt/2UnZ9u6 Die ''Unsinnsgesellschaft''] on Amazon</ref> (1817-1818), his nickname there was ''Blasius Lecks'', and in the he had the pseudonym ''Domwiesel der Eiltrichter''.
From 1821 Kupelwieser worked for two years as [[dramaturge]] at the [[Kärntnertortheater]], where he began his activities as a translator, theatre poet and [[librettist]]. His love affair with the actress Emilie Neumann - the first actress of ''[[Rosamunde]]'' by Helmina von Chézy in the [[Theater an der Wien]] - led him to leave his wife and family and to engage in Graz, Preßburg (where he was also [[theatre director]] in 1825), Budapest and [[Zagreb|Agram]] (1829 also briefly theatre director). From 1836 to 1862 he worked at the [[Theater in der Josefstadt]], again as a dramaturge.
Together with his younger brother [[Leopold Kupelwieser]] he belonged to he "Schubertianern" (friends of [[Franz Schubert]]). In 1823 he wrote the libretto for Schubert's opera ''[[Fierrabras]]'', which was approved by the censors. However, the opera was not performed during the lifetime of the two authors. From 1824 Kupelwieser was also successful as a theatre poet; several of his plays were performed in Vienna and Graz.
Kupelwieser died in [[Rudolfsheim]], (today Vienna) at age 75.
