Born in [[Olsztyn]], [[East Prussia]], Schachtschneider grew up in Berlin and began his private singing studies in 1936, one year before graduating from high school. From 1937 to 1939 he was a student of [[Julius von Raatz-Brockmann]] at the [[Berlin University of the Arts|Universität der Künste Berlin]].
After the war began, he was drafted into the [[Wehrmacht]], and after the Allied landing in Normandy in 1944 he was taken into British captivity, from which he was released only on New Year's Eve 1948. First engagements at the stages in Flensburg, Mainz and Essen followed. Finally he came to the [[Bühnen der Stadt Köln]] conducted by [[Oscar Fritz Schuh]] in 1959 where he interpreted a repertoire of German, Slavic, French and Italian [[opera]]s for over 25 years. Guest performances took him to Vienna, Buenos Aires, [[La Scala]] of Milan and London. Schachtschneider's broad repertoire of roles ranged from the Duke in ''[[Rigoletto]]'' to ''[[Otello]]'', [[Samson et Dalila|Samson]] and [[Tannhäuser (opera)|Tannhäuser]]. He sang in [[Wieland Wagner]]'s ''[[The Ring of the Nibelungen]]'' in Cologne next to [[George London (bass-baritone)|George London]] as Wotan. In Berlin he sang Mephistopheles in Busoni's ''[[Doktor Faust]]'' alongside [[Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau]].
From 1972 he was a lecturer at the [[Hochschule für Musik Saar]], and from 1975 he held a professorship there.
