Ellis was commissioned to write a story to feature new coming companions Polly and Ben, which gained the title, ''The Clock''. The story Ellis wrote only reached the storyline stage and he couldn’t proceed the project further due to other ''Doctor Who'' projects he was busy with. David Ellis submitted the story around January 1966, but was rejected by story editor [[Gerry Davis (screenwriter)|Gerry Davis]] on April 4, 1966, alongside Ellis’s other four-parter, ''The Ocean Liner''.<ref name=":0" />
