== Description ==
R4D-8 17171<ref name=":0"></ref> was a transport aircraft in service with the United States Navy. On 21 November 1973 the aircraft encountered mechanical failure (brought on by icing) during a flight from [[Hornafjörður Airport|Hofn Hornafjördur Airport]] to [[Stokksnes]], forcing it to land on the gravel beach of Sólheimasandur.<ref name=":0" /> The crew of the DC-3 suffered no casualties, but the aircraft was written off as a loss and abandoned. In January 2020, two Chinese tourists were found dead near the site of the aircraft.<ref name=":1" />
