Log Line: Fresh out of prison, BRUNO embraces an honest life when an unexpected loan suddenly puts his family at risk.
Synopsis: After 4 years in prison, BRUNO (34) is finally a free man and back in Maputo city, with beloved girlfriend Mia and their baby.
He finds a job at a scrapyard, and lives an honest life when suddenly, he’s surprised by a bank summons referring to a loan his late mother took. He must pay, or the bank will foreclose on his house. Pressured, he comes up with a plan , putting his life and family in danger.
Directors Statement: The determination to make an independent film came from “film grant post- traumatic stress”. It came from believing in ourselves, and having a deep desire to tell this story, maintaining full artistic control over the finished film.
For six years, we (Mahla Filmes) worked tirelessly on tv commercials, slowly acquired film gear, and saved as much money as we could to cover the costs of the first 100% independent Mozambican feature film production.
With a tight budget and high aspirations, we carefully chose locations that required minimum art direction, but screamed big budget on screen. A specific wardrobe style was created for each character, and costumes were sourced at second hand markets or bought off the cast and crew.
Mozambique is a diverse country with a mix of races, languages and cultural backgrounds, and this was important to represent through the cast and its dialogue. After three months of script readings and workshops with actors and non-actors, together we crafted authentic characters, that sparked up the story and made us all proud.
The film was shot on RED DRAGON (8K), capturing the locations true aesthetics with great detail, providing the freedom for quick lighting set ups and offering remarkable post production benefits.
The opportunity to collaborate with talented musicians, creating traditional, classical and electronic sounds gave birth to a unique soundtrack that mixes perfectly with the film, enhancing its tone.
Resgate was hard work to make. It was really TOUGH! And it wouldn’t have been produced without the passion and dedication of the crew and cast who were willing to work almost for free, giving their absolute best, all the way. I am forever grateful!
My vision for Resgate is that in its journey, it brings dialogue from the issues presented, and encourages young filmmakers to pursue their dreams.
Resgate is my first feature film, and my greatest lesson in life, YET.
MICKEY FONSECA
“Screenwriter, Director and Co-Producer”
“I grew up in fortunate times! Films screened throughout the many cinemas in the country. Long queues and “sold out” signs at the counter, were part of the ritual. Every weekend my grandmother bought tickets in advance, so i could be fascinated and hypnotized by the grandiosity of a Russian war film production, the music and detailed choreography of an Indian love story, the grittiness of the characters and settings of an Italian spaghetti Western.
These magical moments where i profoundly immersed into the stories, left an enormous mark in my subconscious, contributing immensely towards my passion for making films.”
