'''George Cameron Coggins''' (January 27, 1941 – 2019) was a Frank Edwards Tyler Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Law at the [[University of Kansas School of Law]].

==Early life and education==
Coggins was born in 1941 in [[Pontiac, Michigan]] to Charles and Jean Coggins. He spent majority of his childhood in [[Holly, Michigan]] and was the oldest of three siblings. His brother Charles (Chuck) was a superintendent of schools and Jean was a high school English teacher. Coggins graduated from [[Holly High School]] in 1959, where he exceeded in four sports and was a runner-up in the 1959 state high school class B finals. Following it, as a football scholar, he joined [[Central Michigan University]] and later relocated to the [[University of Michigan Law School]] where he served as an editor of its ''[[Michigan Law Review|Law Review]]''.<ref name=legacy></ref> He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School with a J.D. degree in 1966 and prior to it, in 1963, got his A.B. form the Central Michigan University.<ref></ref>

==Career==
After graduation, Coggins spent time relaxing on Hawaii beaches and anxiously awaiting the bar exam results. When they arrived, he joined McCutcheon, Doyle, Brown, and Enersen, a San Francisco-based law firm. After a meeting of one of the law school conventions in San Francisco, Coggins decided to teach [[environmental law]] at the [[University of Kansas]] in 1970. During his 40 years as a professor at the [[University of Kansas School of Law]], he wrote as many as 40 articles and edited over a 100 law textbooks and was known for his collaboration with [[Rob Glicksman]] and Charles Wilkinson. Coggins was a member of the [[Sierra Club]], Kansas Land Trust, and [[The Nature Conservancy]].<ref name=legacy/> In 1973, Coggins participated in the [[Snail darter controversy]], defending [[Endangered Species Act]] against construction of [[Tellico Dam]].<ref name=ku></ref>

==Personal life==
On January 27, 1968, Coggins met Margaret Ann Harding, a Junior at the [[University of Michigan School of Education]], at Bimbo's in [[Ann Arbor, Michigan]] whom he later married.<ref name=ku/> In his free time, Coggins was an avid Sudoku player, a fan of the [[Kansas Jayhawks]] and Maize and Blue, and a supporter of the [[Lawrence Public Library]].<ref name=legacy/>
