William Henry Newdigate (16 May 1824 Astley Castle, Warwickshire - 4 November 1884 Plettenberg Bay, South Africa) <ref>http://bit.ly/2DrmqEa> was the third son of 11 children of Francis Parker Newdigate and Lady Barbara Maria Newdigate nee Legge (29 November 1791 Hayes, Kent - 22 April 1840 Lewisham, Kent). <ref>http://bit.ly/2SnNyyj> The Newdigate ancestral seat was at Arbury Hall in Warwickshire.

William and his brother, George, spent ten months in South Africa, the guests of the Hon. Henry Barrington on his estate, Portland, near Knysna, while looking to buy a suitable farm in the vicinity. They eventually bought the farm Roodefontein renamed Redbourn, of about 1 500 hectares in the Piesang Valley, from Hendrick Lodewyk Pio for £600. To this property he added the farms Ladywood, Buccleugh, Astley and Jackal's Kraal. Over the following 16 years he became a prominent figure in the small local community.
