History
Following the Christianization of the archipelagos by the London Missionary Society in the early 19th century, two prohibitions against "lascivious songs, games, or entertainment" were enacted by King Pōmare II in 1819 and Queen Pōmare IV in 1842.

With the celebration of Bastille Day in 1880, traditional Heiva festivities returned under the name of "festivals of Tiurai", which was renamed Heiva in 1985.
