Souad Al-Sabah was born on the 22<sup>nd</sup> of May, 1942, into a traditional Kuwaiti environment to a knowledge-loving family.  She is the great granddaughter of the sixth Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Mohammed Al-Sabah. Her father had a profound influence on her and a greater part of her special interests have been inherited from him, most of all the love of reading, writing and poetry.

She attended Al-Khansaa School and Al-Mirqab Secondary School in Kuwait. Upon completing her secondary education, she joined the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University, Egypt and graduated with a B.A. Honours Degree in Economics in 1973. Souad Al-Sabah enrolled at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London and later transferred to the University of Surrey (U.K.) where earned her Ph.D. in Economics in 1982.

Dr. Souad married Sheikh Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah, the Deputy Ruler of Kuwait and son of the 7<sup>th</sup> Emir of Kuwait (Mubarak Al-Sabah “Mubarak the Great”), in 1960. She has five children:

    Dr. Souad started her career of research and writing in her area of academic specialisation, producing several publications related to the economics of the oil-producing countries.  This includes fourteen books and several articles; most of which have been translated into other languages such as English, French, German and Chinese.  

Her books “Development Planning in an Oil Economy and the Role of Woman: The Case of Kuwait” and “Anatomy of a Crisis Economy: The Case of Kuwait”, are regarded as standard references for those interested in research on Kuwait, or the Gulf region in general.  Her published work on oil is highly regarded by oil economists and the oil industry. Her scholarly works are not confined to economics, but are certainly varied.  She is a regular contributor to many newspapers world-wide.

Dr. Souad’s writings are not limited to social and economic issues; she is regarded as  one of the most influential and highly-regarded poets in the Arab world and has been awarded several prestigious medals and prizes.

She has published fifteen collections of poetry and her poems appear in many international daily, weekly and monthly publications. Her poetry discusses romance and patriotism and revolve around the universal theme of freedom.

In addition to her published works, Dr. Souad’s recitals and poetry events attract large audiences as well as media coverage. Her poems have also become popularised as songs, performed by famous Arab singers.

Her poetry is included in school and university curricula in countries such as Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Morocco and Iraq. It has also been academically studied in M.A. and Ph.D. theses in Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Bahrain, Iran, China and France.

The Souad Al-Sabah Publishing House is one of the leading publishing houses in the Arab world, with activities and interests that go beyond the Middle East. It started its activities in Cairo in 1988 and then moved its headquarters to Kuwait. It aims to cover heritage, on one hand, where reprinting of historical scholarly works ensures wider knowledge amongst new generations. On the other hand, the House prides itself on publishing exclusive works on literature, history and societal issues.

Translation is also an area of interest and expertise. The House translates distinguished works in many languages into Arabic. The purpose is to provide an intellectual bridge between many cultures, races and nationalities. It also participates in book fairs across the Arab world.

Beyond publishing, the House serves a cultural purpose by offering significant prizes for the young - eight of which are run annually in literature and science. The care for youth extends to publishing their works, which is normally the major obstacle in the formative years of their career. Moreover, the House has been publishing, republishing and translating hundreds of books by the renowned men of letters all over the world and the creative youth in all fields of knowledge.

Examples of some of the House’s contributions are as follows:

·     Since 1988, Dr. Al-Sabah has offered eight literary prizes annually, designed to encourage the work of young men and women around the Arab world, and the winning contributions are published by the House. Four of these are the Sheikh Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah Prize for Scientific Innovation and the remaining four are Souad Al-Sabah Awards for Intellectual and Literary Distinction.

·     Organizing, sponsoring and financing forums and cultural conferences.

·     Sponsoring the first prizes and competitions in the memory of the martyrs of Kuwait and in support of the Kuwaiti POWs in Iraqi prisons, jointly with the Kuwait Journalists’ Society.

·     Republished all the issues of Al-Risalah (The Message) magazine from 1933-1953 in 40 volumes.

·     Providing, free of charge, all governmental and private hospitals with complete sets of its publications for use by the patients.

·     Supporting the “aljahathiya” cultural organisation in Algeria.

·     Four prizes are offered to the creative writers from among graduates the American University of Beirut, in addition to a theatre award, in conjunction with the City Theatre, Beirut.

·     The House offered Souad Al-Sabah course on poems in Fez, Morocco.

·     It has also published many studies and books on the history of Kuwait as well as research on the history of Kuwaiti literature since its establishment till the end of the twentieth century.

·     In collaboration with the National Council for Culture, Arts and Literature, the House organized the seminars of the 3<sup>rd</sup> Arabic Book Exhibition in Kuwait.

·     Highly publicized events are organized to accredit selected leading and eminent writers, authors and contributors to culture in general in the Arab world. In the same vein, in 1995, Dr. Souad launched an initiative called “Youm al-Wafaa” (Day of Gratitude) for honouring the living pioneers of the Arab culture.  Some eminent recipients have been:

3.1 Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah Charitable Trust

Dr. Al-Sabah chairs the Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah Charitable Trust which was established in 1992. The Trust has been serving many causes from education and health to social and personal needs. Since its establishment, the Trust has sponsored over one hundred social, medical and religious centres. Its services are not confined to a specific geographical location, race, creed or religion.

Education is at the core of many of the Trust’s programmes and in addition to scholarships, the Foundation has funded University fellowships, professional chairs and research programmes. For instance, generous scholarships are offered to junior members of staff at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University, towards obtaining their Ph.Ds. As a result of the Foundation’s work, hundreds of students have been given the opportunity to continue their education at various levels, especially in higher education. Students sponsored by the Charity are to be found in 15 U.S. universities, 5 U.K. universities, 5 Gulf universities, 5 Egyptian universities and 2 other European universities.

Moreover, charitable medical programmes are pursued in many corners of the globe. The Foundation has helped patients to obtain treatments that otherwise would have been unavailable to them, including surgeries and transplants.

Out of Sheikh Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah’s and Dr. Souad Al-Sabah’s belief in encouraging the Arab youth in order to foster their sense of belonging to their glorious history and for discovering the talented among them in the fields of sciences, fine arts, social sciences and introducing them to the public by publishing their works, prizes of monetary values were announced in 1988. The Sheikh Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah Prizes for Scientific Innovation were awarded across many fields, including: physics, chemistry, biology, environmental studies and water and desertification studies.

In 2017, Dr. Souad launched the Young Scientists Prize in association with the Arab Media Forum.

3.1.3 British-Kuwait Friendship Society Book Prize

Since 1998, the Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah Charitable Trust has funded the British-Kuwait Friendship Society’s Book Prize for Middle Eastern Studies. Prizes up to £10,000 are awarded annually in London to the best works published on the Middle East, in collaboration with Cambridge University and the Embassy of the State of Kuwait. The HRH the Prince of Wales and Dr. Souad Al-Sabah are the co-patrons of the British-Kuwait Friendship Society.

3.2 Supporting and Financing Centres, Institutions and Programmes

In keeping with her aim to promote dialogue and an exchange of views on contemporary issues and events, Dr. Souad has sponsored a number of forums, bringing people of all cultures together to hear leaders in their fields give their analyses of current developments in a constructive and intellectual environment. Support of universities, educational establishments, cultural centres and forums has also been provided, such as:

* Financing the establishment of a library at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University.
* Financing Abdullah Al-Mubarak library in Al- Farwaniya, Kuwait.

* The Arab Thought Forum’s Research Project and Arab Encyclopedia Project:

Sheikh Abdullah Mubarak Al-Sabah and Dr. Souad Al-Sabah fully supported the research project carried out by the Arab Thought Forum on the future of education in the Arab World. This project was carried out during the period from 1987 to 1990. The findings of the research project were announced in a big ceremony held in May 1990 and attended by Dr. Souad along with a great number of the Forum’s members on the occasion of the Forum’s annual meeting. The research report, carried out throughout during about 3 years, was discussed in the meeting. The discussion included topics such as the world order and the experiments of education development, the current positions of education in the Arab World, the educational policies in the Arab World among others.

The project issued some publications which included studies made by Arab Professors specialized in education and education strategies.

Moreover, in 1990, financial support was provided for the publication of the first part of the Arab Encyclopedia issued by the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Sciences. The announcement of the issuance of the Encyclopaedia was made during the meeting of the Encyclopaedia’s board of editors in middle of 1990. It was announced that the Encyclopaedia will be published in 30 volumes in Arabic and will cover all the legacy of human thinking in all fields of knowledge. During the meeting, Dr. Ali Fakhru was elected as the CEO of the Encyclopaedia and Dr. Souad was elected as the vice CEO.

Dr. Souad grew up in a family which adored all kinds of literature and art and she began to draw from a very early age. This appreciation for art remained with her and is ever present in her publications which contain paintings by her or other artists. Out of this love for art and in order to encourage artists and creatives, she has supported several art prizes:

* Since 1989, Dr. Al-Sabah made special prizes for the Palestinian children in the fields of arts, songs and short stories.
* She awarded prizes for the young people in the fields of (arts, poetry and short stories) and for the best three studies on the culture of the Palestinian people, their struggle and future.
* She specified prizes for the Palestinian institutions working in the occupied lands in the fields of scientific, intellectual and artistic creativity in support for the Palestinian struggle and for the preservation of the Arab Palestinian identity in memorial for Intifada (Palestinian uprising). These prizes were awarded in 1989 Cairo Book Fair in January 1990.

* Prizes were offered to creative writers from among graduates of the American University of Beirut.
* A Theatre Award, in conjunction with the City Theatre, Beirut.
* In collaboration with the Kuwait Arts Association, she launched the Souad Al-Sabah Creativity Award for the GCC countries. The prize-awarding ceremony is held every two years starting from 2008.
* Another prize was then created (also in association with the Kuwait Arts Association) for Gulf Creative Children. The first session was held in 2013.
* The Souad Al-Sabah Biennale for Arab Artists was launched in 2017.

Dr. Souad is a firm advocate of the rights of children and seeks to encourage their artistic and creative talents. She has supported relevant institutions and contributed towards serving Arab children in the following ways:

-     Provided support for many symposiums and conferences on children and published many articles in defense of children’s rights which discuss their upbringing and education.

-     Participated in the founding meeting of the Arab Council for Childhood and Development, which was held in Amman, Kingdom of Jordan, in April 1987 with the participation of two hundred Arab dignitaries, including Queen Noor Al Hussein, Ms. Sarah Sadiq al-Mahdi, and Field Marshal ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Siwar al-Dahab, and Sheikh Isa bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, and Arab thinker Zaki Naguib Mahmoud and Mr. Abdullatif al-Hamad. Dr. Souad was chosen as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Council.

-     Supports the monthly child book project in the Kuwaiti Society for the advancement of Arab Children.

-     Out of her belief in encouraging children to express their talents, she created an annual art prize for the Creative Gulf Child, under the supervision of the Kuwait Arts Association. The first session was held in April 2013.

-     In 2017 she launched the annual “Buds of Arabic Poetry Festival” to instill a love and appreciation of the Arabic language amongst the youth.

-      Dr. Al-Sabah has been fighting for the freedom and rights of people all over the world.

-      She supported the vulnerable and oppressed people. This is evident in her poetry and prose. Moreover, promoting freedom of woman is a theme that runs through her poetry, articles and lectures.

-      She exerted all possible efforts for supporting women in general and Muslim women in particular and defended their rights and principle issues.

-      For decades, she has been daringly fighting to ensure that Kuwaiti woman be granted their political rights and her efforts were fruitful.

-      Awarded the membership card no. 1 by the Arab Organization for Human Rights for her firm support for the rights of the Arab people and in appreciation for her role in the establishment of the Organization and hard work with it for more than twenty years.

-      In 1995, she was chosen by the UN Secretary General as a representative of the UN at the “World Conference on Women” Beijing, China. She was one of five ladies, including the first ladies of the USA, France and Nigeria and the prime minister of Iceland, who were chosen as honorary guests at the conference.

-      She has published three books on human rights. In addition, she participated in publishing books by other writers promoting freedom, democracy and human rights.

-      During the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait, Dr. Souad worked tirelessly day and night with fellow exiled Kuwaitis to do their part to liberate their country through protests; creating awareness about the invasion; supporting Kuwaitis abroad and helping those still resisting and fighting the occupation within Kuwait.

-      With this aim in mind, the Kuwaiti High Committee was created in London, headed by Sheikh Khalid Ahmed Al-Sabah and with Dr. Souad as its Deputy.

-      It rapidly organized itself into different sub-committees to handle media, accommodation, social care as well as forming a research centre.

-      It was under the umbrella of the KHC that several highly-effective media initiatives were launched, such as the “Free Kuwait” campaign.

-      Several of Dr. Souad’s articles and poems were published in the foreign press expressing her outrage and calls for liberation.

-      Furthermore, she contributed financially and morally towards the publication of a newspaper expressing the voices of Kuwaitis everywhere, after being approached by the Minister of Information with idea to cooperate in such a project.

-      It was important to ensure that media broadcasting of the Kuwaiti plight was not forgotten and as such, she personally financed a one hour daily radio called “The Voice of Kuwait”.

-      Additionally, a daily Kuwaiti TV show called “Good Morning My Country” was broadcast from Dammam, Saudi Arabia (which still continues to be broadcast from Kuwait to this day); as well as daily TV report summarizing what had been written about Kuwait in the press.

-      Dr. Souad was able to utilize her literary clout and connections to reach out to fellow Arab cultural figures to encourage them to support and raise awareness about the Kuwaiti issue (such as Naguib Mahfouz, Dr. Yousef Idris, Mustafa Amin, Dr. Fouad Zakariya, Dr. Saad-ildeen Ibrahim, Dr. Ali-ildeen Hilal and so on).

-      She was also able to use her respected ties with civil society groups and NGOs to highlight and discuss the importance of the Kuwaiti cause (such as the Arab Lawyers Association, Amnesty International, the Arab Organization for Human Rights, the Arab Workers Association, the International Labour Organization, the Arab-American Association etc).

-      Dr. Souad regularly kept in contact with international human rights organizations and groups, such as those in Geneva and participated in the ILO’s conference in Prague wherein she presented a paper on the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.

-      She personally participated and helped organize the countless marches and political discussions in London, such as those in Hyde Park.

-      She was invited to discuss the Kuwaiti issue in Washington one month after the invasion, by invitation of the Kuwait Students Union.

-      In October 1990, she traveled to Cairo to organize and participate in several poetry recitals with fellow Egyptian poets to raise awareness about the fight for Kuwait’s freedom.

-      It was in Cairo where she published her first poetry collection about the invasion entitled “Urgent Telegrams to My Homeland” and her first book about the Kuwait cause, “Could You Allow Me to Love My Homeland?”; as well as releasing a cassette tape of her patriotic and resistance poetry.
