Yesubai, also known as Jivubai and Rajaoubai was the only wife of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and was ferocious queen.

Childhood and Marriage
Yesubai was the daughter of Pilaji Raja of the Shirke clan. she was named Rajaoubai by him. Sh was born and brought up in Shringarpur(present day near Prachitgarh). She had a brother named Ganoji Raja Shirke, who later became a fitoor to the Mughals. Pilaji Raja was a great man and taught his children weaponry and politics.

She was married to Sambhaji Raje, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at a young age. When the powerful deshmukh Suryaji Surve was defeated, Pilaji Raja came in the service of Shivaji Maharaj. By the marriage off Sambhaji and Rajaou, Shivaji enabled his access to the Konkan region. Rajaoubai took the name of Yesubai after her marriage, as per the Maratha customs. She spent most of her childhood with Rajmata Jijabai, who taught her politics, weaponry, grammar, logic, etc. She was intelligent, beautiful and a great queen as per some historians.

After Shivaji's Coronation
In Shivaji's Coronation as the Emperor of the Marathas she was made the Yuvarangi of the Marathas. She became the first princess of the Marathas. After some days of the coronation her greatest support, Jijabai died, which caused a great shock to her. After the coronation, Shivaji Maharaj went to the Southern Conquest and left Sambhaji and Yesubai in Shringarpur. There she gave birth to her first child, Bhavani Bai. Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji had planned to trick Diler Khan who had entered the Deccan as per the plan Sambhaji acted to be angry with Shivaji and joined Diler Khan. But, some people like, Annaji Datto considered this as rajdroha and protested Sambhaji. But Yesubai didn't left Sambhaji's hold as she knew that her husband would never leave the Marathas like this.

After Sambhaji's return to the Marathas
Sambhaji returned to the Maratha kingdom and went to Panahala fort. Yesubai too went to Panhala leaving Shringarpur. Shivaji came there to meet his son ,daughter-in-law and granddaughter. He told them about the protest by some people in his court and asked him to stay at Panhala fort. Sambhaji and Yesubai accepted this. Then Shivaji went back to Raigarh, his capital. Soon Shivaji asks, Yesubai to select a life partner for Sambhaji's step brother, Rajaram. She selected the daughter of Prataprao Gujar, Janaki bai as the bride of Rajaram. Soon Rajaram's marriage takes place at Raigarh but Sambhaji and Yesubai couldn't attend it due to Shivaji's orders. After a month of this marriage, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj dies due to anthrax.

House Arrest and return to Raigarh
After Shivaji's demise, some courtiers of Shivaji's court like, Annaji Datto, Somaji Datto, Moropant Pingale and others tell Maharani Soyarabai, Shivaji's widow to protest against her step-son Sambhaji and make her son Rajaram the king. Soyarabai without understanding anything, orders to capture Sambhaji and Yesubai. Annaji Datto and Moropant Pingale leave from Raigarh to capture Sambhaji and Yesubai. They take Hambirrao Mohite, Soyarabai's brother and Pilaji Raja Shirke with them to capture Sambhaji. But as they reach near Panahala, Pilaji Raja and Hambirrao capture Annaji and Moropant and take them to Sambhaji. After planning for several days, Sambhaji and Yesubai leave for Raigarh taking the captives and Hambirrao and Pilaji Raja.

Sambhaji's coronation and his rule
On 16th January 1681, Sambhaji was coronated as the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha kingdom and Yesubai was coronated as the Empress of the Marathas. She was given the post of kulmukhtyar by Sambhaji. Yesubai gave birth to Shahu Raja in these days. The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb took an army of 7 Lakhs and attacked the Maratha kingdom. Yesubai was the support to the family of Sambhaji as Sambhaji was always in battles. Soyarabai commited suicide after some years of this coronation and the marriage of Tarabai and Rajaram. Yesubai's brother, Ganoji Raja asks for watan from Sambhaji but he refuses so Ganoji becomes a fitoor and joins the Mughals. When, Sambhaji was in Sangameshwar, he told about this to Aurangzeb and he captured Sambhaji and executed him after torturing him for a month. He was killed on 11th March 1689. The black time of the Marathas had rose in 1689 after Sambhaji's death.

After Sambhaji's death
After Sambhaji's death, Aurangzeb thought that the Marathas have been finished, so he surrounded Raigarh and asked Yesubai to give the fort to them. At that time Rajaram,Tarabai, Shahu, Yesubai and army were present at Raigarh. Now, she wanted to keep the Marathas safe and wanted the Maratha kingdom to establish. Yesubai planned a plan and sent a a palkhi down the fort and sent an other women instead of her. As the palkhi went down, Rajaram and Tarabai ran away from Raigarh to Jinji fort. Yesubai's plan was successful and the Maratha rule established in Jinji. She, Shahu Raja and Sakwarbai, Shivaji's widow went to Aurangzeb as captives. Sakwarbai died in Aurangzeb's camp. Rajaram and Tarabai started conquering the parts of Maharashtra. After Auranzeb's death in 1707, Yesubai and Shahu were taken to DElhi by Azamshah, Aurangzeb's son. Shahu was released by him to make Shahu and Tarabai fight wioith each other for the kingdom. But Yesubai was captivated many more years at Delhi. Shahu's Peshwa, Balaji Vishwanath Bhat captured Delhi and brought Yesubai back to Satara, his capital. She died after living with her son for some years.
