Koloman von Pataky, real name Kálmán Pataky de Déstalva (14 November 1896 – 3 March 1964) was a Hungarian opera singer (tenor).
Life and career
Pataky was born in Lendava, Austria-Hungaria. After a short and little systematic training he made his debut in Budapest as Duke of Mantua. In 1926 he went to Vienna and took part in the first performance of the Egyptian Helena by Richard Strauss. His focus was on Italian and French music, and he made a name for himself as a Mozart singer. In 1931 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in Der Rosenkavalier.
In the years after his arrival in Vienna at Damböckgasse 10, Mariahilf, Pataky lived together with his 14 years younger wife Lea Beregi (1910-1996), daughter of the Hungarian actor Oskar Beregi (1876-1965) who fled to Vienna in 1919. He led a very hospitable house in his apartment at Margaretenstraße 82, Margareten. In 1932 Pataky applied for financial compensation in Vienna after his tailor and his wife's singing teacher had sued him for unpaid debts. The social affair body, knowing that Pataky was a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera in the rank of an Austrian Kammersänger, revealed that the exuberant hospitality that the couple offered every visitor to their house had allegedly led to the singer's destitution. In September 1932 Pataky's application was rejected by the court, and in December it was discontinued. According to , Pataky might have given up his apartment in Damböckgasse as a result of the apartment indicator.
In 1939, Pataky sang the Hueon from Oberon in Milan Teatro alla Scala under Tullio Serafin.
His Mozart interpretations are said to have been among the best of the 20th century. After a leg amputation he had to end his career in the 1940s.
