Jan Baptist van der Straeten was a specialist architectural painter who created scenes with imaginary buildings and staffage referred to as [[Capriccio (art)|capriccios]]. His architectural fantasies depict opulent palaces amidst terraces, gardens and fountains with a typical Baroque love of exaggeration.
