Denis Villeneuve had long wished to make a film version of Dune, and the project had long languished in [[development hell]]. Villenueve had seen Dune as an iconic movie to make, because of its originality, but while persisting to be involved in making the movie, had seen the process of getting the film rights as two arduous and was sceptical he would be able to.
However, [[Legendary Pictures]] obatined the rights to the film and signed him on as direcotr. The script for the Villeneauve production was written by Villeneuve, with [[Jon Spaihts]] and[[Eric Roth]]. Executive producer credits going to [[Brian Herbert]] (son of the author) [[Byron Merritt]] and [[Kim Herbert]].
The 2020 Legendary Pictures release will be the third version of the film, following the Dino De Laurentis 1984 production, and the 1990 TV version.
