Beatriz Palacios

FeanorStar7: fix spelling; add sort tag

Beatriz Palacios was a Spanish nurse and explorer of African descent that took part in the Spanish conquest of Mesoamerica. Nicknamed " La Parda" by her companions (Pardo being a type of brown), she was one of the first people of African descent to establish herself in the new world. Her date of birth is not clear. She arrived to the new world with the expedition of Grijalva along with her husband, Antonio Alcocer, a white Spaniard. She is mentioned by Cervantes de Salazar, Bernal Díaz del Castillo, and Orozco among other famous conquerors who often express admiration towards her.

They mention that she took over the guard duties in place of her exhausted husband. She tended to his wounds and the wounds of others. She saddled the horses, took care of the weapons, and did everything just like any other soldier.

Both she and her husband survived the conquest and established a family in Cuba.
