During his banking career Schmeelk worked for [[Salomon Brothers]] eventually becoming deputy chairman. During his career he became an expert on American financing of Canadian projects, eventually earning the moniker "Mr. Canada" on Wall Street. During his deputy chairmanship Solomon brothers issued bonds for [[Canadian Pacific]], The provinces of [[Manitoba]] and [[Ontario]], [[Hydro-Quebec]], and the [[Canadian federal government]].
After his retirement Schmeelk provided 2 Million USD to set up the [[Richard J. Schmeelk Canada Fellowship]], a scholarship program to promote unity between English and French speaking Canadians.
For his services to Canada Schmeelk was made an honorary Knight of the [[National Order of Quebec]] in 2005, and an honorary Member of the [[Order of Canada]] in 2018, as well as honorary degrees from [[The University of Western Ontario]], [[Bishop's University]] and [[Laval University]].
