It supports and conducts research aimed at improving the psychological and physical health of children, adults, families, and communities. Two signature initiatives are currently focused on:

* Understanding inequality by examining all hierarchical social structures such as race, gender, social class, wealth, power, status, and cognitive inequalities.
** We aim to develop interventions and strategies for those who have less so they can (a) suffer fewer psychological and health ailments and (b) have access to opportunities to nudge mindsets and improve life circumstances.

* Understanding creativity as it relates to happiness, health, innovation and entrepreneurship.
** We aim to develop interventions and strategies for individuals in the USA and abroad (with partners such as Innovations for Poverty Action) to develop key skills (e.g., openness to new experiences) needed for entrepreneurship.

History
IPSR was founded in 1949 by Director Donald W. MacKinnon and Associate Director Nevitt Sanford. Donald W. MacKinnon was the IPAR Director from 1949-1970. At that time IPSR was called IPAR: the Institute of Personality Assessment and Research. The name was changed in 1992 to The Institute of Personality and Social Research to reflect a broader research agenda of the Institute and associated Faculty members.

The Institute's roots can be traced back to Henry Murray's Psychological Clinic at Harvard in the 1930s (where both MacKinnon and Sanford had been trained) and to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) personnel assessment centers that were established during World War II (MacKinnon directed one of these centers). Subsequent Directors of IPSR include: Richard S. Crutchfield, Harrison G. Gough, Kenneth H. Craik, Philip Tetlock, and Robert W. Levenson as well as several interim directors. Currently the first female Director, Dana R. Carney, is leading IPSR.
