Maharaj Bamni

CAPTAIN RAJU: Added tag to article (Using Twinkle)

Bamni was the Hindu king of Punjab, then known as Paurava, in 4th Century BCE. He was known to be loyal and kind to the public, and brave and strong.

Family
Nothing is known about his early life and background. It is also unknown who his wife was. He had a son named Porus. His son too, was brave, loyal and kind. After Bamni's death, Porus took over the throne. He, in turn, was succeeded by Malayketu. Malayketu was succeeded by his son Bhadraketu.

Rule
He was not on good ties with the neighbouring king, Ambhi, the king of Takshashila. Punjab was very rich during his rule, with gold being sold on the streets. Trade also flourished at that time. This attracted Darius III to the region, who deceived Bamni for years, secretly sent large amounts of riches to his kingdom, and slowly decided to conquer Punjab. But, his plans were foiled by Porus, who had come to know about this earlier. Hence, Darius III was forced to leave the country and return to his own. After this, Porus was crowned king by Bamni himself.

Death
Not much is known about his death. However, by some, it is believed that he died during Battle of the Hydaspes.
