The Day the Sun Died

WhisperToMe:

The Day the Sun Died ( "The Dimming Sun") is a 2015<!--year published in Taiwan--> novel by Yan Lianke, published in Taiwan. Carlos Rojas translated the book into English, and the translation was published in 2018 by Grove.

The novel's events occur in a place called Gaotian, in June, within the span of twenty-four hours, starting at 5 PM, going through the nighttime, with the morning occurring at the end of the book. Li Niannian, a 14-year old boy, narrates the novel. His uncle owns a mortuary. His father Tianbao, who makes funerary wreaths, is involved with hiding oil generated from dead bodies instead of allowing it to be sent to factories. Niannian is often called "stupid Niannian" (Sha Niannian), although his uncle chooses not to do so. James Kidd of the South China Morning Post stated that Niannian "makes an engaging, if unlikely narrator" who has "unadorned" words that belie "complex layers" from a "rhythmic and heavily metaphorical style".

During the novel many residents of Niannian's village suffer from somnambulism. Niannian knows Yan Lianke, who appears in the novel and also suffers from somnambulism in addition to writer's block. Niannian likes to quote Yan Lianke's works, but he often gets the quotes wrong. Over 500 deaths occur as the sufferers lack inhibition and wish to right perceived wrongs inflicted by others. Since the government promotes cremation over burial, Niannian's uncle gains a lot of money.

The narrative keeps track of each hour passing in the story's narrative.

Reception
In 2016 it won the Dream of the Red Chamber Prize.

Sean Hewitt of the Irish Times called it "a brave", "masterful", and "unforgettable novel" that is "poetic, both in structure and imagery." Hewitt stated that sometimes parts of the translation seemed "clunky".

Allan Mas of The Scotsman stated that it is a "remarkable novel" which readers can interpret however they wish.

Kidd ranked the book five of five stars.

Publisher's Weekly stated that the book "is a riveting, powerful reading experience."

Kirkus Reviews stated that the book "belongs in the company of Juan Rulfo’s Pedro Páramo and even James Joyce’s Ulysses." It received the Kirkus Reviews "The Best Books of 2018" Fiction Award.

Richard Lord of the South China Morning Post stated that since the book has its principal characters have a "deeply conflicted relationship" with Hong Kong itself as well as the book having elements of familial issues, the question of a person's identity, sexual issues, and "verbal cruelty", it is of the typical style of the author. The book specifically includes content about the identities of Hong Kong people.

Contents
The stories include criticism of economic inequality, racism, and other contemporary issues in Hong Kong. Yang Jing of Nanjing Normal University stated that "colonial vestiges" appear throughout the stories. Death is a common element in these stories, and Lord stated that overall the collection is "not terribly cheerful, although in places it is very witty."

"Longevity’s Eyebrow", the first story in the book, involves a white man named Jonathan Bracken seducing his friend, an ethnic Chinese woman named Stella Yuen, who serves as the story's narrator, and who had not been previously engaging in sex. Lord described Bracken as "an instantly recognisable Xu Xi Lothario, oozing white-man entitlement."

"Off the Record" involves the Umbrella Movement, and the narrator becomes interested in having sex with a potential client after formerly having a lack of interest in sex altogether. The story includes a quote made by Mao Zedong.

In "Mariner" a Hong Konger named Dirk engages in a conversation with Bobby, an American pilot, whilst at a bar. Dirk misses talking to Bobby after he leaves even though he initially dislikes talking to him; Lord describes Bobby as "outgoing" and "conservative".

"15th anniversary", which has income inequality as its main theme, stars Christopher Woo, an alumnus of La Salle College who has a lower income existence while his fellow former classmates at his 15th anniversary school reunion have higher socioeconomic levels. Lord states that the story is "a beautifully nuanced, richly associative, haunting portrait of a defeated man" while he describes Woo as "one of the [...] most memorable creations" in Insignificance.

In "Canine News" Xu Xi uses her metaphor of racism as a disease, having a proposal to erect "The Doghouse" and imprison people with racist views there. In the story the narrator suggests that a severely low minimum wage is the reason why a bar in Tsim Sha Tsui does not have a good vibe. According to Lord, "Canine News" is "semi-autobiographical". Yang Jing describes the story as "Swiftian", and Lord stated the story has several of the "most sardonic swipes at" Hong Kong present in Insignificance. Another story, "Doghouse Rhapsody" discusses various possible sources for racism.

The final story is "All About Skin," in which characters decide to change the colours of their own skin upon learning they could do so. This story continues the racism as a disease metaphor, and also discusses perceived triviality of beauty, consumerism, and the relations between countries. Lord characterises it as experimental.

Reception
Lord gave the book four of five stars and stated that the author "remains both evocative and efficient as a delineator of character".

During November 1947 at Srinagar in Kashmir, during an action at Badgam, against  the  Tribesmen   Sepoy Dewan  Singh was No 1 Bren Gunner his Section. The Tribesmen were advancing in an over-whelming majority and his Platoon position was being swept away by enemy Light Machine Gun fire. The odds were such that the platoon commander was ordered to withdraw his Platoon from the position.  The enemy by now had reached very near. On seeing this Sepoy Dewan Singh picked up his Bren gun and commenced firing from his hip with great accuracy and speed and was himself responsible for accounting at least 15 casualties on the enemy thereby repulsing the enemy advance and allowing the other personnel of his Platoon to withdraw.

While thus firing at the enemy, he was severely wounded on the shoulder but this was not sufficient to make this Sepoy leave his position. The enemy now finding that the remainder of the Platoon had withdrawn and that this was lonely Bren gun firing being manned by one man, started concentrating on his post. But Sepoy Dewan Singh would not leave his Bren gun  till he himself got a burst of Bren gun on his chest and died.

This sepoy with complete disregard for his own life and through his example of determined and heroic offensive action undoubtedly saved not only his Section but the whole of the remaining Platoon personnel from being completely overrun. His courage, gallantry and devotion to duty is an example to other soldiers. For this heroic action, Sepoy Dewan Singh was awarded MAHAVIR CHAKRA.

List of terrorist incidents in December 2018

Oranjelo100:

This is a list of some of the terrorist, alleged terrorist or suspected terrorist incidents which took place in December 2018, including incidents by violent non-state actors for political, religious, or ideological motives.

Guidelines
*Types of incidents are selected from the Tactics of terrorism page.
*Casualties figures in this list are the total casualties of the incident including immediate casualties and later casualties (such as people who succumbed to their wounds long after the attacks occurred).
*Casualties listed are the victims. Perpetrator casualties are listed separately (e.g. x (+y) indicate that x victims and y perpetrators were killed/injured).
*Casualty totals may be underestimated or unavailable due to a lack of information. A figure with a plus (+) sign indicates that at least that many people have died (e.g. 10+ indicates that at least 10 people have died)&nbsp;– the actual toll could be considerably higher. A figure with a plus (+) sign may also indicate that over that number of people are victims.
*If casualty figures are 20 or more, they will be shown in bold. In addition, figures for casualties more than 50 will also be <u>underlined</u>.
*Incidents are limited to one per location per day. If multiple attacks occur in the same place on the same day, they will be merged into a single incident.
*In addition to the guidelines above, the table also includes the following categories:
:: <!-- light blue |style="background:#E0FFFF;text-align:left" -->
:: <!-- light green |style="background:#b6fcb6;text-align:left" -->

Singapore football league system

Thwekanyaw: /* History */

Association Football is the most popular football in Singapore. It has been around since the british colonial and the first ever Nation's cup tournament was held in the 1892. Ever since then football tournaments were held continuously over the years until to this day.

History
The Singapore Premier League formerly known as the S.League, was first introduced in 1996 and replace the Semi-Professional FAS Premier League. It is the first Professional football tournament in Singapore where players are given a full time contract. The next professional league, Prime League was introduced in 1997 for the reserve team of the Premier Division to compete against each other. It is more or less a professional youth league and youth players who excelled from there can be promoted to the first team. After the professional league, there is a Singapore National Football League or the NFL which is played at a semi-professional standard. It makes up the next tier after the professional league and as of now there are 2 division whereby the NFL Qualification tournament, Singapore Island Wide League or the IWL is the next tier for newly registered Football Association of Singapore clubs compete against each other to gain promotion to the NFL. As of 2018, the Prime League has be dissolved, making the NFL the next tier follow by the IWL. After the FAS Leagues, the most competitive football tournament is the amateur tournament known as the Cosmopolitan Football League, or the cosmoleague. It consists of mainly expat players in Singapore and teams from the cosmoleague teams are known to have beaten the NFL and IWL clubs in pre-season friendlies. However teams do not gain promotion to IWL or NFL as the tournament is not organised by the FAS.

Racial Hygiene: Medicine Under the Nazis

TheGracefulSlick: /* Summary */Wikilink

Racial Hygiene: Medicine Under the Nazis is a non-fiction book by American historian Robert N. Proctor, published in 1988 by Harvard University Press. The author explores the German scientific community’s role in forming and implementing the racial policies of Nazi Germany. In his study, Proctor analyzes how eugenics or “racial hygiene” was used to justify racial programs and traces the progression of eugenic methods, such as involuntary euthanasia, within Germany. Racial Hygiene generally received positive reviews for its analysis of medical practitioners’ complicity in Nazi racial doctrine.

Summary
Racial Hygiene discusses the complicity within the German scientific community in formulating racial policies and the Nazi Party’s censorship of medical journals, thereby ensuring that “racial hygiene” became considered “normal science”. According to an article in the Comptes rendus de l'Académie des Sciences, the book “destroys the argument that the German scientific community was coerced into participating in Nazi programs”.

Proctor traces the history of eugenics prior to the Nazi Party’s rise to power and analyzes how the Nazis incorporated eugenic ideas into their ideology. He demonstrates how theories of racial science imbibed by the Nazis, and the adoption by scientists in turn of Nazi ideology led to large-scale forced sterilization, involuntary euthanasia, and even mass murder. Proctor examines eugenics in the United States, highlighting its sterilization of the mentally ill for espousing a significant influence on racial hygiene in Germany.

The book addresses other aspects of science in Nazi Germany, including efforts to increase the birth rate of ethnic Germans, the preoccupation with health behavior, and resistance within the medical community. Proctor concludes from his research how, in general, Nazism “appealed to academics and intellects”, offering them financial benefits and academic legitimacy.

Reception
A review in Kirkus Reviews noted that the book “revises the idea of Nazis as insane fanatics who perverted science to their devious ends and makes the far more frightening proposition that they were rational, even eminent men, and that Nazi science was deeply rooted in ‘normal’ science”. Professor William E. Seidelman in Comptes rendus de l'Académie des Sciences comments Racial Hygiene is distinct from other works covering the subject because of the book’s “broad overview of racial hygiene within the context of prevailing scientific/political values and beliefs”. Commenting on Proctor’s “provocative research”, Mary Nolan in The New York Times praises how the book “forces us to reassess the dynamics of Nazism but also challenges pervasive notions about the political neutrality and objective value of science and the moral innocence of scientists”.

San Gottardo Altarpiece

DilletantiAnonymous: /* References */

The San Gottardo Altarpiece is an oil on canvas painting by Giovanni Cariani, previously dated to 1520 but now thought to have been begun in 1517 and completed in 1518. This made it perhaps his first major work and certainly the first work he produced in Bergamo after arriving there on 15 August 1517 - St Joseph was the city's patron saint. It was commissioned as an altarpiece by the council of the Scuola di san Giuseppe for the church of San Gottardo. There was tension between the commissioners and the artist and - instead of Cariani - they opted for Lorenzo Lotto and Previtali for the larger works in the church.

The painting was taken out of the church when it was suppressed and demolished under the Napoleonic regime. The main work and its predella of the Flight into Egypt were both in the palazzo Nuovo in Bergamo in 1803, when the latter was sold for 80 francs to Giuseppe Sonzogno and later entered a private collection and then the Accademia Carrara

In 1904, Glyde was elected to Bradford City Council, representing Tong. While on the council, he championed free school meals, and the rights of unemployed people. Although he stood down in 1911, he contested and won the seat again in 1913. He published a local socialist newspaper, the Bradford Vanguard, which he used to vociferously criticise World War I. For this, he was prosecuted under the Defense of the Realm Act.

By 1920, Glyde was in poor health, and he retired from political activity, dying three years later.

Initially the U.S. and Iran enjoyed a close relationship, but during the 1970s oil embargo Iran insisted on keeping oil prices high, so the US switched to using Saudi Arabia as its primary ally. Iran's economy experienced significant problems after the Saudis modified production to decrease oil prices. According to Black, ""Oil Kings" follows the model of the film "Syrianna" in portraying the back-channel politics that control the flow of oil and the global politics that emanate from that dynamic."

The Oil Kings details Nixon and Pahlavi in particular. Black states that the book has relatively little documentation.

Reception
Black states that the book "excels" due to the quality of its original research as well as "discipline" and "virtue of focus".

Joan Oleck, a freelance writer in New York, wrote in an article for The National, a newspaper in Abu Dhabi, that she had a positive impression of the book. She stated that at times the author used more content than necessary, such as too many quotes.

Publisher's Weekly stated that the book is "both a vivid study in sycophancy and backstabbing and a shrewd critique of Kissingerian geo-strategy."

Kirkus Reviews stated that the book was "A revelatory, impressive debut."

Martha A. Sheldon (May 22, 1860 — October 10, 1912) was an American medical missionary in India, Nepal, and Tibet.

Early life
She graduated first in her class from the University of Minnesota in 1883, where she was also active in skating, rowing, and swimming. She earned a medical degree in Boston, Massachusetts.

Career
Sheldon became a "missionary-deaconess" of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1889, to serve in Darjeeling. After six years, she and Annie Budden moved to a mission post in the Pithoragarh district, near the India-Nepal border (in present-day Nepal). There she served from 1895 to 1912, most of those years with Eva C. M. Browne. The couple ran a small farm with vegetables, fruits, and cows. She learned the spoken Bhotiya language, devised a written version to record it, and composed translations of Christian texts for local use. She and Browne began a kindergarten, organized schools for girls and women, opened a clinic, built a church, and hosted visiting missionaries.

Sheldon and Browne traveled to Tibet in 1900-1902. In Tibet they offered medical care, helped start a Christian church, learned Tibetan and translated some texts into that language too. "Again medical work opened the way for me to spend two weeks in Tibet. I was called to Lake Manasarowar to operate for cataract upon women living near the monastery," she wrote in a published letter. "It was a great joy to be in golden Tibet again." In one incident, the women disguised themselves as Bhotiya women to visit Taklakot, and held religious meetings, before officials asked them to leave.

Great-Vienna () was the name given to an enlarged version of Vienna. First attempts at the creation of Great-Vienna already existed in the times of the Habsburg monarchy. After the Anschluss of Austria into Nazi Germany in 1938, Vienna was expanded to "the largest city of the Reich by area".

Nowadays the term "Great-Vienna" is mainly used to distinguish Vienna, which was enlarged during the Nazi era, from the present-day city. In 1954, during the Allied-occupation of Austria the extensions were majorly reverted.

Hard and Soft Magic Systems

ChezzyEm: Added references paragraph heading

The idea of hard magic and soft magic was created by Brandon Sanderson for world building and creating magic systems in fictional writing. The terminology of hard and soft originate from hard and soft sciences, hard science fiction, hard fantasy and soft science fiction and both terms are approximate ways of characterising two ends of a spectrum. Hard magic systems follow specific rules, the magic is controlled and explained to the reader and can be used for building interesting worlds that revolve around the magic system. Soft magic systems do not have clearly defined rules or limitations and are used to create a sense of wonder to the reader.

Brandon Sanderson created Sanderson’s Three Laws of Magic which are more so guidelines, in lieu of actual laws, that can be used to create interesting magic systems and world building for fantasy writing.

Soft Magic
A soft magic system is vague and undefined with a mysterious list of rules and limitations that is never explained. It creates a sense of awe and deepens the fantastical setting. The focus of these types of stories is not usually on the magic itself and the main character usually isn't a magic user. The main conflict is not solved by magic, instead it's solved by valuable lessons the main character learns throughout the course of the story. Often when magic is used to solve a problem, it will actually make the problem worse. In these types of stories, the reader is never certain of the dangers and wonders that the characters will encounter and the characters themselves never truly know what can and can't happen.

Stories with soft magic systems include:

* Lord of the Rings
* Chronicles of Narnia
* Song of Ice and Fire

Hard Magic
A hard magic system has specific rules surrounding its use and can be used for creating very interesting world building by effecting the culture, government or society at large within the fictional world. Clear costs and limitations are outlined for when magic is used and throughout the story, the reader eventually understands what they are and how they work. This allows the magic to feel much more realistic; in some stories the magic may even be considered a type of science within the world and on some occasions may not even be called magic, such as bending in Avatar: The Last Airbender and alchemy in Full Metal Alchemist. This allows the characters to use magic to solve problems while avoiding the cliche of magic mysteriously making everything better. Instead it is the characters' experience, intelligence and ingenuity that solves conflicts by learning how to use the magic in unique ways which still abide by the magic's rules. Hard magic needs predictability and consistency, when magic goes wrong it's from the characters' lack of knowledge, misuse, or mistake when using magic, not because the magic is inherently unpredictable. Hard magic is a useful writing tool and careful application can enhance the character, world building and story plot.

Hard magic does not have to follow the laws of science and there does not have to be an explanation as to why people are able to use magic in the first place. Hard magic is categorised by the reader's understanding of what the magic can do.

Stories with hard magic systems include:

* Superhero stories (how the super powers work and their limitations are always explained even if the reason why is unexplained or impossible)
* Doctor who
* Full Metal Alchemist
* Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
* Robot series (Asimov)

Hybrid Magic Systems
Most magic systems in popular fantasy books fall somewhere between the spectrum of hard and soft magic.

Stories with hybrid magic systems include:

* Harry Potter (falls about halfway) — students learn rules around magic however there are many unexplained spells, abilities and aspects in the rest of the magical world that is left unexplained. Spells rarely draw from the strength of the caster so it focuses more on limitations rather than costs of using magic.
* Avatar: The Last Airbender (falls about halfway) — the bending is a type of magic and there are very little costs to the use of it other than exhaustion due to the physical exercise of the martial arts aspect.
* The Wheel of Time series — mostly technical magic and is it fairly clear to the reader what the magic is able to do however there are many loose ends that imply something unknown or new around the corner.

Sanderson's Laws of Magic
Brandon Sanderson is an American fantasy author who has written three articles that are relevant to the use of magic in writing. Sanderson’s Three Laws of Magic are NOT laws to follow when creating magic or a magic system for a story, they are guidelines that can be used to help create interesting world building and magic systems for fantasy stories. These three guidelines used when writing a hard or soft magic system.

Sanderson's First Law
* An author’s ability to solve conflict with magic is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to how well the reader understands said magic.

Sanderson's Second Law
* Weaknesses are more interesting than powers
* Limitations, Power, Weaknesses and Costs

Sanderson’s Thirds Law
* Expand on what you have already, before you add something new. If you change one thing, you change the world.

The Shah (book)

WhisperToMe: /* Reception */

The Shah is a 2011 book by Abbas Milani, published by Macmillan. It is a biography of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the final Shah of Iran.

Susanne Pari of the San Francisco Chronicle stated that the biography was even-handed, lacking bias, and that it was "a fair and insightful account of a psychologically complex man who was ill-suited for a hard job, yet unable to give up or give in." Stanley Meisler, in a Los Angeles Times article, also stated that the book had a neutral tone even though Pahlavi's government had previously persecuted Milani.

Background
Milani, in charge of Stanford University's Iranian Studies program, was at one time imprisoned by the Pahlavi government. He read diplomatic reports and other formerly classified information from Iran, the United Kingdom, and the United States as part of his research. He also conducted several interviews.

Contents
Pari stated that Pahlavi appears "distrustful and paranoid", based on failed assassination attempts and other actions against him, and that the author's research validates this portrait. Milani had described Pahlavi as "in the classical sense of the word, a tragic figure — a hare pretending to roar like a lion." The book uses lines from King Richard III at the start of each chapter. The final portion of the book chronicles the overthrow of Pahlavi.

Reception
Meisler stated that the book is "a thoughtful and colorful biography without rancor." Meisler compared the overthrow of Pahlavi with the overthrow of former President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak, which occurred as part of the Arab Spring at the time of Meisler's review.

Publisher's Weekly stated that the book is a "good source" about Pahlavi's life, but that it was "good enough to pique the reader's frustration that it isn't great." Publisher's Weekly stated that some facts lacked context and therefore a reader would not know how to interpret them.

Kirkus Reviews stated it was "an incisive portrait" of Pahlavi and "A stimulating biography and a thorough examination of the makeup of" Iran.
