Geminal dithiol

A geminal dithiol (or gem-dithiol for short) is an organosulfur compound having two thiol functional groups (-SH) bound to the same carbon atom. The simplest geminal dithiol is methanediol H2C(SH)2 <!-6725-64-0-->. Such compounds are formed when aldehydes and ketones are treated with hydrogen sulfide under pressure. The reaction competes with formation of trithianes. Once formed, gen-dithiols are stable under ordinary conditions.

Seaborne Freight (UK) Limited is a company that plans to run roll-on roll-off ferries between Ramsgate in Kent, UK and Ostend in Belgium. It was incorporated on 5 April 2017 but ferry operations have not commenced.

On 22 December 2018 the company was awarded a £13.8 million contract to run ferry services between Ramsgate and Ostend to cope with the consequence of likely capacity constraints on the Dover - Calais route after 29 March 2019 in the case of a No deal Brexit. That the company has no ships and has never operated any ships, and that the Port of Ramsgate must be dredged before services can commence, raised questions as to whether due diligence checks had been undertaken before the award of the contract. The award of the contract without prior publication of a call for competition in the Official Journal of the European Union was justified by the "extreme urgency brought about by events unforeseeable for the contracting authority and in accordance with the strict conditions stated in the Directive".

The Ramsgate - Ostend route was last operated by Transeuropa Ferries until 2013.

Col du Géant

GentleDjinn:

The Col du Géant (Giant Pass) at 3,356 meters is the main passage of the Mont Blanc massif between Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley and Chamonix-Mont Blanc in the Arve Valley. On the French side, to the north is the Glacier du Géant which overlooks the Mer de Glace.

Geography
The pass is between the peaks of the Tour Ronde and the Dent du Géant. Near the pass are Pointe Helbronner and the Torino Hut.

There is a border dispute between France and Italy, similar to that which concerns the summit of Mont Blanc. Italian maps depict the border line on the pass, while on the French maps it passes a hundred meters to the south, the pass being entirely on French territory. This dispute was revived in 2015, following a ban on access to the Giant glacier from the Torino refuge, by the municipality of Chamonix.

Ida Arenhold

Charles01: image from German wiki

Ida Arenhold (11 October 1798 - 24 September 1863) was a German social welfare pioneer. She was a co-founder and the first overseer of the "Friederikenstift" which is the oldest and still the largest hospital in Hanover.

Biography
Ida Arenhold was born in Herzberg am Harz, a small country town between Hanover and Göttingen. She was the first of the eight recorded children of Wilhelm Arenhold (1768–1849), a senior court/government official, by his marriage to Ilse Leßmann. A year later the family moved to Hanover in connection with Wilhelm Arenhold's work. In 1822, after a long illness, her mother died: Ida was left to take charge of her father's substantial household and look after her seven younger siblings.
<!---
wiki-de:

Dunedin by-elections, 1862

Hugo999:

::::WORK IN PROGRESS
The 1862 City of Dunedin by-elections were three by-elections held in the electorate in Dunedin following three resignations.

The City of Dunedin electorate was one of the original 24 electorates used for the 1st New Zealand Parliament in 1853.

In 1862 it was a two-member electorate in the 3rd New Zealand Parliament.

:Thomas Dick resigned and on 17 March was re-elected; he had originally been nominated by someone not qualified to do so. Apart from the period before his re-election, he was a member for the electorate for the whole of 1862.

:Edward McGlashan resigned and on 30 May was replaced by John Richardson

: John Richardson resigned and on 15 November was replaced by James Paterson. Major Richardson was transferred to the new electorate of , and thought it fair to let the electors of the new electorate have a vote. However the writ was mistakenly issued for the abolished electorate of the City of Dunedin, and the two individuals present nominated him.

Rocher de la Tournette

GentleDjinn:

The Rocher de la Tournette is a rocky outcrop at 4,677 meters above sea level, on the summit ridge of Mont Blanc between the Petite Bosse and the summit. It is not considered as one of the 82 of the Alps of more than 4 000 meters, but appears in the complementary list of the secondary summits. It is also the summit of the l’éperon de la Tournette (grade of difficulty AD), which leads to the summit of Mont Blanc from the Refuge Quintino Sella.

Air crash site
The Lockheed Constellation Malabar Princess (Air India Flight 245) crashed on November 3, 1950, near the Rocher de la Tournette, with 48 passengers and crew members, a tragedy that inspired 1952 the novel La Neige en deuil (The Snow in mourning) of Henri Troyat (adapted to the cinema in 1956), then the movie Malabar Princess in 2004.

A second accident occurred on 24 January 1966, of the Boeing 707 Kangchenjunga Bombay-New York (Air India Flight 101), which also struck the outcrop in the same sector. In 2013 this crash inspired a novel by Marc Levy, Un sentiment plus fort que la peur (A feeling stronger than fear, English translation 2013, also under the title Stronger than Fear).

Jean-Marc Peillex

GentleDjinn:

Jean-Marc Peillex (born 1 May 1954) is a French local and regional politician from the DVD, currently serving as Mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains in the department of Haute-Savoie. In May 2014 he was re-elected for 6 years (until 2020).

He became known nationally and internationally by his long campaign for a regulation of the acces to Mont Blanc, the highest summit of the French Alps, via the popular Goûter Route or modern French normal route on the territory of his municipality.

Campaign for regulation
For decades, overcrowding of the Goûter Hut and the Goûter Route became a growing problem during the summer months on Mont Blanc, more than elsewhere in the Alps, because of its implications for security and ecology, at a local level interacting with the global climate change affecting the mountain landscape and mountaineering, leading to more rockfall and crevasse forming by high-altitude permafrost degradation, which also attributed to a rise in the number of accidents with alpinists.

Because of these concerns, mountain tourism and the safety of public in the area became a controversial topic, and Peillex became a major spokesman about the issue, often addressed by the media requesting his comments after tragic fatal accidents and lurid incidents on the mountain.

As the accountable authority for the public order and safety in his municipality, Peillex campaigned during 15 years for regulation by means of a permit system in order to restrict the number of climbers attempting to summit the mountain via the Goûter Refuge, for both safety and ecological reasons, in his initiative “La Montagne à l'Etat Pur” (The Mountain in its purest state) to "responsibilitize" the climbers.

In the debate over his propositions, he accused the neighbouring municipality Chamonix-Mont Blanc of blocking attempts to regulate the crowds of climbers, allegedly it had “sacrificed Mont Blanc on the altar of money and turned it into a new Disneyland.”

In September 2006 Peillex hosted a public meeting fo which he invited mountain guides, tour organisers and representatives of climbing organisations to discuss his ideas. He put forward some fairly radical propositions; an obligatory permit – of which the number issued would be restricted by the total capacity of the refuges of Tête Rousse and the New Goûter Hut): 210 per day. Or making it obligatory for climbers to hire a guide, in order to prevent overcrowding in the mountain huts and an increasing number of inexperienced and ignorant visitors risking their lives without the skills to climb the mountain.

Summer of 2017
On 21st June 2017, Spanish trail runner Kilian Jornet livestreamed on his Facebook page himself on the summit ridge of Mont Blanc on running shoes and dressed in t-shirt and shorts. This footage would soon become extra controversial when the "deadly summer" of 2017 resulted in a record number of victims, including two trail runners trying to imitate this stunt.

The second accident happened shortly after Peillex decided on 17th August to issue an order with immediate effect by which anyone who accessed the summit should carry adequate equipment.

He also launched a desperate rhetoric appeal to the French national government, taunting the passivity of president Macron and the responsible ministers Collomb (Interior) and Hulot (Ecology) in the debate.

To enforce the equipment regulations, on 25th August, the prefect of Haute-Savoie announced a reinforcement of the control at the Tête Rousse Hut on the mountain: gendarmes will check the equipment of climbers and dissuade those ill-equipped to pursue their goal.

In an interview with L'Express in August 2017, the Mayor believes that Mont Blanc had become "un endroit banal", a trite and sordid place. "There is a false impression of facility: Mont Blanc has been very popular in recent years, with the mistaken impression of being in an urban environment with relief everywhere."

Summer of 2018
In 2018 the authorities of the department Haute-Savoie came to terms with the laments and indignation frequently inexorably expressed by Peillex.

During the heat wave in June 2018, Peillex and the prefect issued together an official communiqué with a negative advice, discouraging the climb, and early August 2018, another communiqué alerting for the dangers of the stonefall in the couloir.

On the 13th July, Pierre Lambert, the prefect of the department Haute-Savoie in Annecy, had already followed Peillex's proposals by issuing a decree that temporarily restricted the route to climbers with a reservation for the hut, which was extended repeatedly . The question was raised if such a restriction should become permanent

On 17th August Peillex issued another communiqué in which he vented his indignation about "attitudes ahurrisantes et intolérables" of impetuous climbers.

After another accident ridden summer and several illustrations of the frivolity of some aspiring climbers, as well as incidental aggressive confrontations and antisocial behavior, on 03rd September Peillex could announce to impose in 2019 a permanent restriction in the form of a daily limit of 214 climbers for the route to the Goûter Refuge, according to a decision of the prefecture of the department who had finally yielded by instituting the proposed regulation.

Starting 2019, climbers on the Goûter Route without guides must pick up a “free” permit from the local tourism office to prove they have a bona fide place in a refuge on a given day.

Monster in the Mirror

Cunard: creation with sources from here

"Monster in the Mirror" is a song performed by Grover, a Muppet character from the PBS television series Sesame Street. Copyrighted in 1989, the song was composed by Christopher Cerf and Norman Stiles.

In the song, Grover first sees a monster in the mirror before realizing the monster is himself. That theme is a repeat from the 1971 book The Monster at the End of This Book: Starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover, in which Grover ultimately realizes he is that monster at the end of the book. A music video for the song premiered in 1991 in the television special Big Bird's Birthday Celebration. The video featured 25 celebrities including Ray Charles, Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Julia Roberts, and The Simpsons characters.

The song revisits a theme in the 1971 book The Monster at the End of This Book: Starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover, where Grover, saying "I'm so embarrassed!", realizes he is that monster at the end of the book.

The song appeared in the 1993 video Sesame Street's 25th Birthday: A Musical Celebration. "Monster in the Mirror" was one of the songs in the 1995 album "Sesame Street: Platinum All-Time Favorites" and the 2003 album Songs from the Street: 35 Years of Music.

One of the song's refrains is "Wubba Wubba Woo". In September 2002, First Lady Laura Bush appeared on Sesame Street and read a book called Wubba, Wubba, Woo! to Big Bird, Elmo, and several children to promote children's literacy.

Analysis
Maureen Turim in the 2000 book Psychoanalyses / Feminisms wrote that the song is about a baby happening upon a monster in the mirror. After a few of the song's verses, the monster's intense stare becomes less fierce. Turim said that the verses move from "the transliteration of babytalk" ("Wabba wabba wabba wabba woo woo woo") to "recognizable English phenomes" ("I will wabba you and you will wabba me"). She interpreted the latter verse as being babytalk for "I will love you if you will love me". She wrote that "Violence, proxemics, and touch are hinted at when the monster's 'wabba' seems to become meaningfully transitive and even aggressive, sounding like a threatening 'rubba'."

The music video accompanying the song features a collection of scenes from popular culture in television. The scenes are not only from PBS shows or children's shows but also from shows for older viewers. Turim said that one interpretation of this is that Sesame Street is telling viewers "This is you, your mirror, your culture, never first or last, but in one looping, eternally present surround. This is how you will learn to see, to speak, to move, and to love—watch and learn".

In the 2008 book Monster Boss, Patricia King wrote in a chapter titled "The Monster in Your Mirror: You're Scaring Your Employees" that Grover "croons about how he tamed the monster in the mirror with kindness". She said that managers can sometimes be both "a monster boss's victim" and "some other victim's monster boss". King concluded that "Grover's song has a point. In good management practice, kindness is a good place to start."

Maria Bartholdi in Twin Cities PBS's Rewire website called "Monster in the Mirror" one of the "Top 10 Greatest Sesame Street Musical Moments" and said "It is impossible not to dance to this catchy number!" She said the song has "the deeper message of being the change you'd like to see in the world". David Zurawik of the Los Angeles Times called the "Monster in the Mirror" "unforgettable" because of the "Wubba, wubba, wubba, wubba, woo" chorus and the celebrity music video "the happiest two minutes of film that I've ever seen". David Whitehouse of The Guardian said "Monster in the Mirror" gave viewers "the classic Ray Charles duet with the Cookie Monster".
